Exeter Flying Post: Saturday 23rd October 1897

Newton Abbot: District Council: At a meeting of the Urban District Council on Monday it was decided to make a general district rate of 1s 2d in the £ for the ensuing half-year. The Highweek Parish Council wrote stating that Messrs. W. S. Pinsent, A. B. Segar, J. Wright, and C. J. Vicary had been appointed as committee to confer with the Urban Council with respect to the proposed provision of a bathing place. After a discussion Messrs. Parker, Stevens, Segar, and Prowse were appointed to meet the deputation. The Jubilee: The final meeting of the Wolborough and Highweek Jubilee Joint Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. W. S. Pinsent presiding. The Entertainment Committee reported that the £125 voted for them was more than enough to carry out the programme. A vote of thanks was accorded to the ladies for their untiring efforts and to Miss Hickey for providing entertainment. The Procession Committee’s report was also highly satisfactory. The Juvenile sports Committee reported that the total number of entries amounted to 1,950. The £231 received from the day’s celebration was just sufficient to cover the expenses. For the hospital, Newton subscribed £896 and the outlying parishes £30, and the total £929, less £14 for printing etc. was ordered to be paid to the treasurer of the Cottage Hospital. The jubilee decorations were presented to the Reception Committee of the Devon Agricultural Society for their meeting next year. Vote of thanks to Mr. W. S. Pinsent (chairman of the Joint Committee), Mr. L. Bearne, C.C. (Chairman of the public meeting when it was decided to support the hospital scheme) and to the Hon. Secretaries (Messrs. W. H. Jarvis and Charles Pope, closed the proceedings.

Mr. W. S. Pinsent presided at a meeting of the Newton Diamond Jubilee Committee last evening. Reports from various sub-committees were adopted, and it was reported that the receipts for the day’s celebrations were L. 245 15s 6d, and for the Hospital, L. 926 11s 2d. It was decided to present the two secretaries with a medal each and that the members of the Finance Committee of 1867 be asked to hand their balance of L. 7 over to the 1897 Committee.

Public Meeting at Newton Abbot: A public meeting of the inhabitants of Newton Abbot was held at the Town Hall last evening to consider the question of accepting the invitation sent to the Devon County Agricultural Association to hold their meeting at Newton in 1898, and to appoint a committee to carry out the necessary arrangements. Mr. Lewis Bearne, Chairman of the Urban Council was voted to the chair. Those present included … (list) … W. S. “The Little Maidstone” at Highweek: The Aspersion Resented: At a meeting of the Highweek Parochial Sanitary Committee last evening, Mr. W. S. Pinsent in the chair, the question of the six cases of typhoid fever at Mill-lane, Highweek reported by Mr. Harvey, Medical Officer of Health to the Newton Rural District Council, last week, was brought up. Mr. S. Segar, Sanitary Inspector, and surveyor, reported that the number of cases had not increased, and the well, through drinking the water of which Mr. Harvey said the fever had been caused, was locked up, while a sample of the water had been taken, and was in the course of being analysed. Invitation from Newton Abbot for 1898: A meeting of the inhabitants of Newton Abbot was held in the Town Hall on Friday to consider the advisability of inviting the Devon County Agricultural Association to hold its Exhibition for 1898 at Newton. Mr. Lewis Bearne (Chairman of the Urban District Council) presided over a small attendance and moved that the Association be invited to hold its annual show at Newton next year. Mr. W. S. Pinsent (Chairman of Highweek Parish Council) seconded, and the motion was carried. A Committee, consisting of Messrs. L. Bearne, W. S. Pinsent, W. Vicary and A. S. Rendell was elected to send the invitation. Mr. G. D. Woollcombe was appointed Hon. Secretary, pro-tem.

Mr. W. S. Pinsent presided at the Jubilee Committee meeting on Monday. It was reported that the Wolborough feoffees had given £20 to the fund for feeding the poor. The Treasurer (Mr. T. M. Hoskin) reported having received £216 for the Hospital endowment Fund. It was decided to hold an open-air dance in Courtenay Park from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.; and indoor dance at the Alexandra Hall from 10 p.m. to midnight, that the recreation ground be lighted with an immense illuminated devise, the Gas Company providing the gas free, the Committee paying £4 for labour, that the Volunteer band be engaged at a cost of £17 10s and that a procession by held at 10 a.m. starting from Forde Park.
