Highweek Parochial Sanitary Committee: Mr. W. S. Pinsent presided at the monthly meeting of this body on Monday, when there were also in attendance, Messrs. C. G. Vicary, J. Olver, J. Dolbear, W. H. Brock, T. G. Weatherdon, W. Shapley, W. L. Shilston, C. Adams, A. B. Segar, and A H. Burge; with the clerk, Mr. T. S. M. Underhay; sanitary inspector Mr. S. Segar; and sub-inspector, Mr. R. A. Rogers: Mr. W. S. Pinsent was unanimously re-elected Chairman on the motion of Mr. C. G. Vicary, seconded by Mr. W. L. Shilston. The Scavenging Committee was re-appointed, with the substitution of Mr. Burge for Rev. A. A. Woollcombe, who has ceased to be a member. An Emergency Committee consisting of Messrs Pinsent, Vicary and Shapley was created … … (discussion of business) … … Highweek Parish Council: The meeting this Council, composed of the same membership, followed. Mr. J Wright was permitted to sign the usual declaration at the next meeting. The CHAIRMAN announced the receipt of a letter from Mr. D. Woollcombe, Hon. Secretary to the local Agricultural Show committee, inviting the Chairman and members of the Council to join with Newton Urban Council in welcoming the Agricultural Association Council to Newton on Monday next. Mr. J. Winter, Show Secretary, had also written intimating that the Show would be officially opened at noon Monday. Mr. Vicary thought it would be a big committee. It might look as though they wanted to get in for nothing (Laughter). The Chairman: The funds won’t allow that. He intended to see Mr. Bearne with the view of issuing a joint address of welcome. Mr. J. OLVER thought Mr. Pinsent should be the spokesman, as the show would be held in Highweek parish. … The Chairman: Then I shall be ill on that day (Laughter). Mr. Pinsent was asked to make the best arrangements he could and to communicate with the members.

The Devon County Show: To be opened at Newton on Monday. The Devon County Agricultural Show has twice in its twenty six years of existence visited Newton Abbot for its annual show – first in 1875 and then in the Jubilee year. Next week’s function at the town on the Teign, however, promises to outdo both its predecessors from all points of view and to take a prominent place among the Society’s successes … … A Special service for those engaged will be held in the yard on Sunday by the Rev. S.G. Harris, Rector of Highweek. The yard will be opened at half past nine on Monday morning, and the formal opening will be at noon when Mr. L. Bearne, chairman of the Urban District Council, Mr. W. S. Pinsent, chairman of the Highweek Parish Council, and the local committee (Mr. G.D. Woollcombe, Hon. Secretary) will welcome the President, Lord Clifford, and the Council for the Association.

Highweek: There was a good attendance including all the Parish Councillors except Rev. S. G. Harris, absent through indisposition. Mr. W. S. Pinsent, Chairman of the Parish Council, having been nominated for a seat, Mr. W. Vicary, was voted to the chair. For the 14 seats the following were nominated: Charles Gilbert Vicary, merchant; Samuel George Harris, rector; John Olver, clerk; William Shapley, grocer; Charles Adams, farmer; William Swayne Pinsent, merchant; William Henry Jarvis, schoolmaster; William Henry Brock, clerk; John Wright, merchant; Tom Gregory Weatherdon, mason; Alfred Buckland Segar; yeoman; William Lang Shilston, farmer; Arthur Henry Burge, watchmaker; John Dolbear, farmer. Newton and Highweek Drainage: Still Unsettled: Mr. J. Alsop forwarded to Newton Urban Council on Monday copy of a resolution reported to the Rural Council by Highweek Parochial Committee, to whom the Rural Council had referred the question of the working of the agreement in reference to the repair of the sewers jointly used by Highweek and Wolborough. The Rural Council suggested that the course proposed by the Highweek Parochial Committee should be adopted, as it would probably lead to an amicable settlement of the question at issue. The resolution was: “That this Committee would suggest that a committee meet a Committee of the Newton Urban Council with a view to arriving at a satisfactory wording of the proposed agreement, and that the following members of the Committee be nominated to act on the suggested Committee and report to this Committee at the next meeting; viz.
