Winchcombe Church Meeting: Appointment of a Curate: A special meeting of members of the congregation of Winchcombe St. Peter’s Parish Church was convened, and this took place in the girls’ schoolroom. The Rev. F. M. Wickham (vicar) presiding. There was a fairly large attendance. The Vicar said it was his intention to ask the Church Council to sanction the appointment of the Rev. G. R. Wehner, A.K.C., to the curacy of Winchcombe. … (discussion of church accounts for 1923 … and lack of funds) … The Vicar said that when offered the living he was told the parish would provide a curate, and this was confirmed by the resolution aforesaid soon after his coming. He would like to say that he subscribed L. 10 to the Free Will Offering Fund. During the time of the Rev. Pinsent’s indisposition the speaker paid the whole cost of the Sunday duty during his colleague’s holiday and when absent himself paid the assistant clergy’s fees (applause). He would also add that the whole cost of entertaining these fell on himself during their stay at the Vicarage from Saturday till Monday … … Concluding, the Vicar said he was quite unable to do financially what Mr. Roberts and his friends suggested (applause). …

Whist Drive at Winchcombe: The committee of St. Peter’s Lads’ Club organized a whist drive, in aid of their cricket section, and this took place at the Women’s Institute on Monday night. The affair was a great success; there being 25 occupied tables. The prize winners were as follows …

The M.C.’s for whist were the Rev. J. Pinsent and Mr. S. Fisher. Prizes were given by Dr. W. S. Soden, Rev. J. Pinsent, Mr. A. V. W. Smith, Miss Lane, Mr. G. W. Tovey and Mr. R. Agg, and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbey. The committee was Messrs. D. H. Agg, P. Major, S. Fisher, W. J. Turner, L. Holmes, with the Rev. J. Pinsent as principal organizer.

Evesham & West Midland Observer: Saturday 7th April 1923

Winchcombe: St. Peter’s Cricket Club: There were about thirty members present at the annual meeting on Wednesday night last week, the Rev. J. Pinsent (Treasurer) being in the chair. An adverse balance of £1 12s 4d on the last season’s working was reported. Mr. S. Fisher was re-elected Hon. Secretary, Mr. P. Major was also re-elected Captain, while Mr. L. Homes was appointed Vice-Captain. The Rev. J. Pinsent resigned his position as Treasurer, saying he was leaving the town. Regrets were expressed. Mr. Donald Agg was elected to fill the position. The Committee were made up as follows: Captain, Vice-Captain, Secretary, Treasurer and Mr. W. J. Turner. The Rev. J. Pinsent kindly offered to make up half the adverse balance. At a committee meeting which followed, it was decided to hold a whist drive in the near future so as to commence this year with a clean sheet.

Easter Vestries: … Winchcombe: … The curate, the Rev. J. Pinsent, was leaving on April 21st. the speaker [the Rev. F. M. Wickham) said he would not deny that he had made some alterations in the church services, the only one of moment being a choral Communion instead of Matins once a month and on great festivals. He wished to come to a fair and open agreement on the matter, to live and let live, if possible, without any compromise of principle on questions which it was ultimately his duty and responsibility to decide. Rev. J. Pinsent was heartily thanked for his work as curate, and in reply he said he was sorry that owing to his health he had to leave Winchcombe, and he wished to thank everybody for the kindness he had received. The reverend gentleman intimated that he was prepared to give a contribution towards the expense of the extra Sunday duty, whilst he was laid up. …

Winchcombe St. Peter’s Cricket Club: There were about thirty members present at the annual meeting of the above club held at the White Hart Hotel, Winchcombe, on Wednesday night, the Rev. J. Pinsent (treasurer) being in the chair.  That gentleman read the balance sheet, which showed an adverse balance of – £1 12s 4d on the last season’s working, but he explained that this was not so bad considering it was their first season. The next matter on the agenda was the election of a secretary and Mr. S. Fisher was elected unopposed. Mr. P. Major was also re-elected captain, while Mr. L. Holmes was appointed vice-captain. The Rev. J. Pinsent resigned his position as treasurer, saying he was leaving the town. Regrets were expressed at this intimation. Mr. Donald Agg was elected to fill the position. Confirmation at Winchcombe: The Right Rev. Dr. A. C. Headlam, Bishop of Gloucester, held a confirmation service in the Winchcombe Parish Church on Tuesday afternoon. There were 105 candidates from the following parishes Winchcombe 25, Toddington 8, Buckland 0, Dumbleton 6, Aston Somerville 6, Stanton 18, Alderton 13, Childswickham 7, Stanway 3, Temple Guiting 9, and Swindon 1, there was a very full congregation. Winchcombe Parish Church: The harvest services in connection with St. Peter’s Church commenced on Friday and continued on Sunday, full congregations being present at each service. The decorations were, as usual, on a lavish scale, the altar, font, and pulpit being of particular notice. The preacher on Friday evening was Canon P. M. C. Johnstone, M.A. (Vicar of All Saints’ Cheltenham), who preached a most interesting sermon, taking for his text, “We sow, others reap” The Rev. F. M. Wickham (Vicar) officiated at the Sunday services, and was assisted at Choral Eucharist by the Rev. J. Pinsent, and an evensong by the Rev. Crawley Boevey. …

At St. Peter’s Parish Church, Winchcombe, on Wednesday afternoon, there was a full congregation present at a memorial service. Rev. J. Pinsent (curate of Winchcombe) officiated in the absence of the Rev. F. M. Wickham (away on holidays,) and he was assisted by the Rev. Collins Ashwin (Rector of Dumbleton and Rural Dean of the Winchcombe Deanery) who read the burial service. The hymns “The saints of God”, “Praise my Soul,” and “The Strife is O’er” were fervently sung by the choir and congregation. Prayers by the Rev. Pinsent and the blessing concluded the service …
