The County Representation: Mid-Devon or Ashburton Division: Mr. Joseph Howes at Chudleigh: Mr Howes visited Chudleigh on Tuesday and addressed a large and very enthusiastic meeting, composed chiefly of working men, in the open air on the Play Park. Mr George Stooke, a leading Liberal in the district, presided, and on and around the platform were the Rev. H. Bentley (Congregational minister), Messrs. W. Robinson, junr. (Bovey Tracy), J. Quick (Newton), G. Pinsent, T. Fletcher, Joshua Widdicombe, and others; The Chairman in introducing Mr. Howes to the meeting expressed delight at large attendance of working men, as it clearly showed they were beginning to awake to a true sense of their interest the country … (political speech) …
