Rugby: Totnes v Plymouth R.: At Totnes on Saturday Plymouth kicked off, and the visitors worked down from the centre but Totnes by several short breaks reached the Plymouth 25. Marley tried to clear, and the ball went to Stoyle, Tucker taking his pass nicely. Good work by Berry was followed by Plymouth being put on the defensive, again play went back to the centre. Plymouth gained by tackling Pinsent with the ball: They kept up the attack by short kicks to touch and the Totnes ‘quarters put some smart kicking, which took them to midfield. Stoyle started with a pretty effort and the Totnes forwards got to the Plymouth line. The visitors cleared and burst right away to the other end, just as the visitors looked dangerous Totnes were awarded a free, Windeatt and Pinsent helping play up the field. Hodges was keenly tackled, and a huge kick sent to the Totnes end. Totnes then cleared finely and nearly scored, a Plymouth man putting in a thirty-yard run, which brought relief. Each team attacked in turn, but play was somewhat scraggy, and at half time there was no score. Totnes played from the Station end in the second half and were quickly penned in their own territory. A hot attack on the visitor’s line was sustained for some time, Powell eventually getting away to the centre. The homesters were very keen in their tackling and the Reserves were kept out, a big burst putting the Totnes men on the offensive again, the effort resulting in Stoyle scoring a well deserved try. Pinsent failed to goal, The Totnesians were superior outside the scrum and the visitors did not have much chance of becoming dangerous. Powell got away, but from a scrum Windeatt cleared and initiated a nice round of passing between the quarters, Stoyle being grassed. This had put Totnes on attack again, and Kinsman was nearly over the line, a series of light scrums ensuing in front of Plymouth goal. Windeatt picked in the loose and dropped neat goal, and then ‘mouth made determined efforts to force the homesters back, but it was only a brief relief, and Totnes, aided by Marley again reached Plymouth quarters, and the game ended: — Totnes, one dropped goal one try; Plymouth A, nil.
