Mayor’s Day at Bovey Tracey: This time-honoured custom, shorn of all its glories except the inevitable dinner, was celebrated on Monday at Bovey Tracey. In former years a mounted procession, headed by a brass band, perambulated the streets, the borough bounds were beaten, and several other ancient but now obsolete practices were observed. Only the “day”, the mayor, and the dinner remain and the latter the principal feature of the occurrence, was well attended by the freeholders. The assembly place the Dolphin Hotel. In the absence of the Mayor (Jabez H. Mugford, Esq.), the chair was taken by Mr. H. Baker (ex-Mayor), supported his right by the Rev. J. Pearse, and the left by Mr. J. Chave, of Dunsford Mills, near Exeter; the vice-chair was filled Mr. Wm. Sparkes, in the absence of Mr. Thomas Crocker, bailiff; there were also present: Messrs. E. Endacott, W. Endacott, T. Bray, T. Loveys. G. Bond, W. Beer, A. Godsland, G. Andrews, W. Steer, J. Causley, J. Short, J. Moore, G. Edwards, S. Sly. W. Tucker, W. Bovey, H. Pinsent, B. Hill, W. Wyatt, G. Snell, T. Welsford, John Holmes, W. Jarvis, (etc.)
