Newton Petty Sessions: Yesterday … Capt. Cornish Bowden (chairman) Admiral Wise, Dr. Atkinson, and Messrs. J. Vicary, J.B. Ellicombe, D. R. Scratton, C. J. Wade and J. G. J. Templar, the license of the Victoria Inn, Ashburton was (on the application of Mr. Creed) renewed the landlord being unable to attend at the renewal day. — Under the new licensing act, the license of the Newton Brewery was by the consent of the owner – Mr. Pinsent – reduced so to be only in operation on weekdays closing ten o’clock. The bench was engaged for a considerable time revising the jury lists for the different parishes in the district. The license of the Turk’s Head Inn was temporarily transferred from Mr. Scawen to Mr. Pollard.
