Western Times: Friday 29th January 1864

NEWTON ABBOTT: Accident: On Tuesday evening last, Mr. Samuel Drew, foreman to Messrs. Pinsent, the eminent brewers of this town, met with a painful accident, whereby his ankle was dislocated, and the small bone of his leg broken. It arose from his standing on a chair turning off the gas, after the men had left work in the evening, from which he slipped off. Dr. Elliott was immediately sent for. The sufferer is progressing favourably.

Subscriptions will be gratefully received by the subjoined gentlemen, or at the Devon and Cornwall Bank, Newton Abbot, and the proceeds will be securely invested by the Committee for the future advantage of the Family: — THOS. Newton Agricultural and Labourers’ Friend Society: Annual Meeting: Yesterday: This old-established association, whose efforts to promote the agricultural interests of the county, have for the past quarter of a century met with most encouraging evidence of success, held its annual meeting yesterday (Thursday). The proceedings in every respect passed satisfactorily. The ploughing match took place in a field at Buckland Barton, in the occupation of Mr. Walter Rendell. The day was delightfully fine, and the prospect from the field was splendid … (description of committee and event and then dinner) … The Dinner was held in the large and handsome hall of Beazley’s Globe Hotel, it is needless to state that the catering at this well-known hostelry was of the most creditable character. The chair was occupied by Lord Churston, while J. H. Whiteway, Esq., (Fishwick), and E. Heazley Esq. Exeter District Court of Bankruptcy: Friday August 21st, (before Mr. Commissioner Andrews): Exeter Loan and Discount Company: Re. Thomas Beer, draper and builder, St. Sidwell, Exeter. This case had been adjourned for the purpose of investigating the dealings of the bankrupt with the above named Loan Company: … Mr. Fryer appeared for the Bankrupt, and Mr. Huggins appeared for Mr. Lambert and Mr. Pomeroy, the former of whom is the managing principal of the Loan Society and the latter a clerk in Mr. Lambert’s employ … [discussion of finances … includes] … Bankrupt: The execution was made by Messrs. Pinsent and Co. of Plymouth. I owed them £30, and Mr. Lambert was aware of that at the time he agreed to advance me the money. When I gave him the bill of sale, I told him that Messrs. Pinsent were suing me for the money: Cross-examined by Mr. Huggins: – Messrs. Pinsent’s bill was for drapery goods. In the course of the year I turned over about £200 worth of drapery goods. … (continues).
