Southall Radio Society: Interesting Lecture on Blattnerphone: At this week’s meeting of the Southall Radio Society, Mr. Pinsent gave an interesting and lively lecture on the “Blattnerphone.” Mr. Pinsent, who was closely connected with the development of the Blattnerphone in this country for a considerable period, explained that its advantages were: Portability, faithful reproduction, and immediate “playback” of any recording. He gave a detailed description of the general principles and construction of the various machines marketed in this country. The company were vastly entertained by Mr. Pinsent’s account of the difficulties encountered in the early days and the humorous situations in which he found himself due to his association with the Blattnerphone. in closing the meeting, the President thanked (Mr. Pinsent for an interesting and enjoyable evening. Next week the subject will be “The Cathode Ray Tube” by Mr. Stephens.

Bank Directors Arrested:  Warrants were issued on Saturday at St. John’s, Newfoundland by Judge Conroy for the arrest of Sir Robert Thorburn, a former Prime Minister and member of the Newfoundland Legislative Council, the Hon. A. W. Harvey, Minister without portfolio in the present Cabinet, Mr. Donnelly, Receiver-General in the last Cabinet and Mr. Grieve, another leading politician, all being directors of the insolvent Union Bank, as well as Mr. Pinsent, manager of the bank. They are charged with issuing false balance-sheets in 1893 and 1894 on the affairs of the bank, and thereby inducing the plaintiffs and others to become customers, creditors, or shareholders, where they were defrauded of large sums of money. Bail was accepted in two sureties of 18,000 dol. each, and each director is 36,000 dol.
