French Officers at Tattoo: Distinguished French officers, allies of Britain during the war, will next week make a tour of south coast towns under the auspices of Lord Derby and the United Associations of Great Britain and France. They are to be entertained at Folkestone, Hastings, Eastbourne, Brighton and Hove, Worthing, Bognor Regis, Portsmouth, Winchester, and Southampton, by the civic authorities and the local branches of the united Associations of Great Britain and France, and privately by Admiral Sir William Fisher, Commander-in-Chief (Portsmouth), and by Sir Robert Kindersley, at Flaw Hatch Hall, Sharpthom, Sussex. As guests of Major Pinsent, Mayor of Winchester, they are to be present at the Aldershot Coronation Tattoo.

Winchester’s Plate and Charters: Exhibition Now Open: An opportunity of seeing the valuable plate and charters of Winchester City is provided by a four-day exhibition at the City Guildhall, which was opened on Wednesday by the Mayor (Councillor Major J. R. Pinsent, D.S.O.). The exhibition, proceeds of which will go to the local Charity Organisations Society, is of topical interest because it includes copies of the Crown jewels. The historic charters and the plate, too, are of great interest. They are seldom on public show. _ _ The City’s treasures are insured for £3,000, but that sum by no means represents their worth. Oldest Grant: One of the most interesting of the charters is the earliest one the City possesses. Its seal has vanished, but otherwise it is in a remarkable state of preservation. The charter is dated 1155-62. It was given by Henry 11, and grants toll freedom to citizens of the Guild of Merchants. … continues …

Lord Hampden, of the Hospital, said he hoped the Council would go on “being daring” until they had completed the kind of hospital that was necessary for the town and district.

The county Hospital: Sir – those who sign this letter are concerned to read in your issue of last week that the Bi-Centenary Appeal Fund for the Royal Hampshire County Hospital has not yet provided sufficient funds for the construction of the new nurses’ home. We are informed by the Committee of Management — and from our own knowledge, we can support that view that the provision of a new nurses’ home is essential for the welfare of the nurses and for the efficiency of the Hospital. We therefore appeal to the county for further contributions on a sufficiently generous scale to enable this essential work to be completed. We who sign this letter have agreed to subscribe to this further appeal a sum not, less than that which we gave to the 81-Centenary Appeal and we earnestly hope that others may do the same, and that new subscribers may join in this good work. … signed … (includes) … J.
