Uplowman: The funeral took place in the Churchyard, on Tuesday, of Walter W. Davis, of the Redwood Arms, who was the victim of a motorcycle accident. The Rector (Rev. E. Sandford), officiated. The family mourners were Mr. and Mrs. Popham (stepparents), Lil and Len (sister and brother), Mrs. Edwards (aunt). Amongst those present were Mesdames A. S. Weston, Pinsent, F. Norman, G. Norman, Bidgood, Tooze, Crook, Davey, Broom, Frodge, Lock, Mr. and Mrs. Brice, Misses A. Bidgood, E. Davey, A. Redwood, Messrs. J. Gidney and W. Drew. The breastplate was inscribed: — “Walter W. Davis, died March 8th, 1928, aged 19 years.”

News from the Colleges: … … Last night (Monday) the Celtic Society held its final meeting, taking the form of a concert of folksongs and pennillion singing. Tonight (Tuesday) the Scientific Society will hear tow lectures by members of the staff. Mr. V. C. Morton, M.A., head of the pure mathematics department, will speak on “Logic and Mathematics in Science,” and Mr. A. Pinsent, M.A., lecturer in Education will speak on “Imagination and Intuition in Science”. It is the aim of the organizers of these meetings to provide themes for discussion which will appeal to all students of the various branches of work done in the various branches of science and will at the same time have an immediate bearing upon the peculiar interests of each department.

Chartered Surveyors: Spring Meeting of the Devon and Cornwall Branch: The Devon and Cornwall branch of the Surveyors’ Institution at its spring meeting at Plymouth nominated Mr. J. F. Bowden, F.S.I, (Exeter) as a member for inclusion in the ballot for the council of the institution. Mr. F. G. Fleury, P.A.S.I., holder of the special rating diploma of the institution who has recently come from London to Plymouth, read an interesting paper on “The Rating and Valuation Act, 1925, in Practice;” and was thanked on the proposition of the branch chairman, Mr. C. Lee Wright (Exeter) seconded by Mr. F. W. H. Pinsent (Plymouth). …
