Cannock Light Railway: Advantages to South Staffordshire: Commission Grant a New order: A Light Railway Commission, comprising the Hon. A. E. Gathorne-Hardy (chairman), Colonel G. F. O. Boughey, R.E., C.S.I, and Mr. Henry Allan Steward, sat in the Wolverhampton Council Chamber on Wednesday to hear an application by the London and North Western Railway Company for an Order transferring to the company certain powers which had been conferred upon a company called the Wolverhampton and Cannock Chase Railway Company by Acts of Parliament 1901-1903, and Light Railway Orders 1906-1910. Mr. G. J. Talbot, K.C., represented the London and North-Western Railway Company, Mr. A. W. Carver, the Cannock Rural District Council: Mr. Herbert Taylor, Mr. W. H. Fowley; Mr. G. L. Pepler, Sir Richard Paget, Mr. G. D. Elliott, the Ashmore Park Colliery Company; Mr. Horatio Brevitt, the Corporation of Wolverhampton; Mr. R. H. Pinsent (sic) the Holly Bank Colliery Company. There was no opposition. …  (plans to build a light railway to service the collieries) … Replying to Mr. Pinsent, witness [Mr. W. A. Lichfield Mercury: Friday 31st March 1899

Mr. Jackson at Denstone College: Mr. F. G. Jackson, F.R.G.S., the leader of the Jackson-Harmsworth Arctic Expedition, gave a lecture on Saturday afternoon at Denstone College, his old school in Staffordshire. A large gathering of local scientists and others had been invited to meet him, and the audience, numbering some five hundred, was accommodated in the great Schoolroom. Mr. Jackson delighted his hearers by an interesting and valuable lecture, dealing chiefly with his geographical work in Franz Josef Land, and enlivened by frequent anecdotes. The company present included the Headmaster, the Chaplain, and the assistant masters, with the boys of the school, and the following visitors: Lady Pinsent, Mrs. J. Edwardes, Mrs. Jackson, Col. Moseley (Hulland Hall), Miss Grosvenor Jennings, Capt. and Mrs. Dawson, Revs. Worthington (Netherseale). Birley, Barns, Barnwell, Mayne, Boissier, Cave Humfry, Jourdain, Adamson, Streeter, Keble, Fielden, Oakden, Wrottesley, Thomas, etc.
