Wrington: Bazaar: On Wednesday a bazaar and sale of fancy and useful articles was held in the schoolroom, Wrington, the proceeds to be devoted towards raising a sum of £235, for improving and removing the organ in the parish church from the west end to the chancel. Mr. W. Long of West Hay, Wrington, who takes a great interest in all church matters has contributed most liberally towards the object … The room was decorated by Mr. E. Edwards and at the end was a pretty fernery and fountain, which had been erected by Mr. Showan and Mr. Pinsent. Mr. W. Long had engaged the services of the German band from Bath, and they played an excellent selection of music during the day … …

There was a good attendance … The Secretary read a letter he had received from Mr. H. Pinsent, of Doddiscombsleigh, stating that he exhibited a two-year old filly at the Honiton Exhibition. It was the only one in the class but had no prize; he therefore entered a protest against the judges’ ruling. …

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: Friday 19th July 1878

Northam: Local Board: A meeting was held in the vestry room on Saturday last. A. B. Wren, Esq., J.P. presided and there were also present General Hutchinson, Captains Sangster, Molesworth, and Wren, and also Messrs. Williams, Tucker, Penhorwood, Heywood, H. Cawsey, Bassett, and Rev. E. Reynolds. – Captain Sangster asked why the tenders for Westward Ho! drainage was not advertised for? The Clerk said they were waiting for a letter from the Local Government Board, which had not arrived. General Hutchinson said the drainage would have to go through his land; therefore, he should oppose it strenuously, as he knew the Plympley scheme would be money thrown away. Captains Sangster then produced a letter from the Local Board to Mr. Pynsent: … (acknowledges receipt of letter acknowledging that there was a dispute between members of the Westward Ho! Committee, but says it has no legal powers) …

William Manning and son will offer for Sale by Auction, at the Hotel, Westward Ho!, on Wednesday, 31st of July next, at 3 for 4 o’clock in the Afternoon precisely, several FIELDS, Closes of Land and Building Sites, comprising altogether upwards of 15 Acres, adjoining the residences of Capt. Stapledon, Thomas Pynsent, Esq., and others, formerly portions the Glebe Lands of Northam, but now part of the Corporate Property of the Borough of Southmolton, in Lots as described in handbills, which may be obtained of the Town Clerk. The Lands are well situate adjoining the high road from Bideford to Westward Ho, and near the far-famed Northam Burrows and Pebble Ridge, and the celebrated Golf Links; within ten minutes’ walk of the Church, the Sea, the United Service College, the Great Nassau Bath, Hotel, etc.; and about two miles from the Town of Bideford and the Railway Station; and contain, without exception, some of the best Building Sites in this justly celebrated locality.
