Coronation Visitors: Hampshire Offers of Hospitality: That a big influx of visitors from overseas may be expected in Hampshire for the Coronation celebrations was stated at the annual meeting of the Winchester, Hampshire, and Isle of Wight branch of the English-Speaking Union, held at Winchester city Guildhall. “We, in Winchester,” said the mayor (Councillor J. R. Pinsent, D.S.O.) “are in an amazingly good position for visitors. We are in the South, between the port of arrival and London and we possess a city unique in the attractions it has to offer. Winchester’s Next Mayor: Councillor Major James Ryland Pinsent, D.S.0., (sic) has been selected as the next Mayor of Winchester. He is under 50. Born at Birmingham. he is the son of Mr. R. A. Pinsent, a former president of the Law Society. In 1915 he married Kathleen, the daughter of Col. E. G. Boyce, R.E. They have two sons. He has been a member of the City Council since 1931, is a member of the College staff, and prominent in the Boy Scout movement. The present Mayor (Councillor A. T. Edmonds) is retiring from the Council.

Mayoral Expenses: Winchester Refuses an Allowance: Councillor Sankey proposed at a meeting of Winchester city Council a motion that the mayor should be allowed up to £250 a year for expenses. He said that as things were at present, he was deprived of the Mayoralty, and he knew other members who could not afford to take it on.
