Newton did not beat Bridgwater Albion on Saturday, but the fact that the comparatively weak team which represented the club escaped defeat is a matter worthy of congratulation. The passing was excellent throughout, both sides combining well. A draw about represented the game. Furze, who took Pinsent’s place at back, was a great success, and the committee need have no qualms about a back so long as there is Furze to fall back upon. … (a description of the game)

Hockey at Totnes: A match was played on the ice of Blight’s Marsh at Totnes yesterday afternoon between teams representing Newton and Totnes. The visitors were captained Mr. C. B. Kay, while Mr. C, Barran superintended the home team. On the whole the game was fairly even, and the result — a win for Newton by five goals to one — does not represent the character of the contest, as Totnes were rather unlucky on a few occasions in not scoring. The Newtonians played with more combinations than Totnes and this accounts for their win. The scorers for Newton ware Messrs. Kay (2), Kirby (2), and Pearse (1), while W. Holmes scored the Totnes goal. For Newton, besides the scorers, Messrs Webb and Pinsent were conspicuous for good play, while Messrs. P. Holmes, Pinkerton, and Jellicoe played well for Totnes. Mr. E. Adams (Totnes) was referee

Newton Abbot: Skating has been in full swing on the ice at Stover for a fortnight. On Saturday a hockey match was played between Newton Residents v. Rest of the County, and after a most exciting match resulted in a win for Newton by six goals to two. Mr. Kay scored three goals and Mr. W. Taverner, Mr. J. Taverner and Mr. H. Pinsent (sic) one each for the winners. Mr. Clarke scored for the county. The trade at present in Newton is very quiet indeed, and one of the oldest inhabitants said that it is many years since such severe weather and hard times have been experienced. During the past three weeks a number of working men have been out of employment, and the distress amongst some of the families is heart aching.
