A ballot was taken, Mr. Pinsent receiving 18, Mr. Burns 8, and Mr. Dunn, 3 votes: Mr. Pinsent was therefore elected.

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: Wednesday 29th August 1895

The annual meeting of the Newton Football Club was held on Tuesday evening the Bradley Hotel. Mr. H. Knight took the chair. There was a fair attendance. The accounts showed an adverse balance of £13 11s 3d, which was due to the expense of enclosing the ground. Mr. H. Knight was elected President. All the Vice-Presidents were re-elected, and the Rev. C. H. Wreford the Rev. C. W. C. Bowkler, Dr. Ley, Dr. Hunt, Mr. H. E. Robyns, Mr. Lock, and Mr. H. G. C Bishop were added to the list. Mr. V. S. Pictor was elected captain, and Mr. W. H. Pinsent sub-captain. The Hon. Treasurer (Mr. J. Taverner) the Hon. Secretary (Mr. H. Rodders), and Auditors (Messrs. T. Martin and H. T. Parker) were re-elected.

Chiefly through the fine play of the captain, backed up by some good batting on the part of J. Underhill and G. Abbot, the captain’s side won by 47 runs. W. H. Pinsent played a vigorous inning of 18 runs for the losing team.

Newton: On Monday Newton journeyed to Bristol and met the representatives of the city, a well fought game resulting in the visitors being defeated by two tries to nil. … … (a description of the game includes) … … But Mapleton cleverly intercepted a pass, and ran to the centre, where, in some loose play, Denning secured and raced for the Newton goal.
