Funeral of the Late Mr. J. B. Pinsent: Amid every sign of regret and manifestation of sorrow the funeral of the late Mr. J. B. Pinsent, head of the firm of Messrs. Pinsent and Son, brewers of Newton Abbot, took place at Highweek Parish Churchyard, on Monday afternoon. A large number assembled outside the deceased’s residence Street and around the graveside to pay their laid token of respect. Deceased, who was the oldest tradesmen in the town, stated our last issue, died the previous Thursday, senile decay being the cause of death. He was much loved and esteemed by all who knew him. His mortal remains were deposited in the family vault which contains the bodies of his wife and children who predeceased him, the situation being at the east end of the old portion of the burial ground. At tradesmen’s shops and private residences in the parish the shutters were either put up or the blinds drawn, testifying to the deep respect in which they held the deceased, who was an octogenarian.

The principal mourners were: —Messrs. W. S. Pinsent, son, J. D. Pinsent, W. H. Pinsent, Robt. Pinsent, and O. Pinsent, grandson, and Mr. Horton, Devonport. Among those who followed in carriages were Messrs. H. Pochin and J. Metherell, representing the Inland Revenue, E Tucker (Ashburton), S. Segar, T. Magor, H. T. Parker, H Parker, jun., J. Mills, H. On Wednesday the team journeyed to Paignton and defeated the Avenue by 3 to nil. Newton had the best of the game from first to last. C. B. Kay kicked 2 goals and C. L. Donaldson the other. H. L. Hobson of Newton College is an acquisition, his play at centre-half being a treat. P. H. Foster, the captain, was also in excellent form and Pinsent is developing into a very good little half.

The Primrose League: Lord Ashboune and Mr. Mallock, at Torquay: A meeting in the Bath Saloons, Torquay, on Wednesday evening, in connection with the Torquay Habitation of the Primrose League, was largely attended, the Dame President, Mrs. Mallock, presiding. Mr. R. Mallock, M.P., said the present Session, which should have been so fruitful, had been talk, talk, talk, simply a deluge of words. … (political speech) … A musical programme was also given, those taking part included Miss Gregory and Messrs. Kay, Pinsent, and D. Coombe. Mrs. Clode gave an exhibition of conjuring. Dancing commenced at 11 o’clock.

It is a curious fact that Newton always plays a good game when represented by what might be called a pick-up team, containing perhaps half of the usual players. This has happened on several occasions and occurred once more on Tuesday against Jesus and Clare Wanderers. About one third of the team was Torquay men, three or for second men were included and the remained belonged to the usual team. Pinsent, Elwell, Francis, and Kay were the only regular men present, and in addition Newton played one short until half time …
