Newton Abbot: At the Liberal Club, Newton Abbot, a very excellent concert was given for the benefit of the performers during the winter season. The contributors were Messrs. W. Hexter, W. Davis (violin solo), W. Mudge, F. E. Fuller (humorous readings), R. Hayman, W. Pearce, W. Lobb (cornet solo), J. L. Elms, W. H. Pinsent, W. H. Hawker (banjo and mandolin trio) and Mr. W. J. Hawken (mandolin solo). Selections were also given by an orchestra. The arrangements were satisfactorily carried out by the Social Evenings’ Committee, with Mr. W. Lobb as the energetic hon. secretary. …

The opening social in connection with the Mid-Devon Liberal Club was held on Saturday evening. Mr. A. J. Murrin, C.C. presiding over a very good attendance. A splendid programme was provided. Some capital selections were rendered by the Club Orchestra, whilst vocal and instrumental contributions were given by Messrs. Paddon, F. Drake, J. Pack, J. Dore, B. Munday, W. Lobb, W. Mudge, J. Addams, F. E. Fuller, J. L. Elms, Pinsent, W. Hawken, W. Pearse, F. Valley, G. Stephens, F. Truscott, Stancombe and Mortimore. At the close hearty thanks were accorded the chairman. Mr. O. Gilpin was the accompanist.

 MID-DEVON CONSTITUTIONAL CLUB: ANNUAL MEETING MEMBERS: Last evening the 19th annual general meeting of the members of the Mid-Devon Constitutional Club was held at the Club premises, Newton Abbot, Dr. R. H. Grimbly (chairman) presiding over large attendance. The annual report stated that the Club continued to successfully carry on the work for which it was formed. … (discussion of Club and finances) … Mr. Martin proposed the re-election of Dr. Grimbly as chairman. This was seconded Mr. C. C. Pound. Both gentlemen spoke in eulogistic terms of the services rendered by Dr. Grimbly and the confidence in which he was held by all the members. The resolution was carried with loud cheers and the singing of “For he’s a jolly good fellow.” Dr. Grimbly replied that as long as he had their confidence, he would use his utmost endeavours to look after its welfare and be at their service whenever called upon. (Applause) The Vice-Chairmen were elected as follows: Captain E. Kitson, Dr. J. Goodwin, and Messrs. G. H. Hearder, S. T. Cole, W. J. Tompkins, J. Webster, H. Howe, R. Hambly, W. Jewell. L. Owen-Tucker, A. H. Burge, H. Warner, H. Thomas, sen., W. H. Pinsent, C. C. Pound, and W. J. Blake. Mr. Owen-Tucker was re-elected hon. treasurer, and Dr. J. Goodwin and Mr. T. Shilston hon. auditors, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to them for past services.

Visitor’s Fatal Fall at Shaldon: A Dangerous Practice: An inquiry was held by Mr. G. F. Kellock (deputy coroner), of Totnes, at the Town Hall, Teignmouth, touching on the death of Edgar Candy, aye 27, a civil engineer, of Balham, London. S.W. who died at the Hospital on Saturday’ morning from injuries sustained in a fall from the roundabouts at Sheldon Regatta. Evidence of identification having been given by a brother of the deceased, Frank P. Candy, a sanitary engineer – William Henry Pinsent, brewer, Newton Abbot. described the accident. Deceased, he said, was sitting with his back to the horse’s head on the roundabout, when he slipped and fell, apparently in the act of turning round. … … The jury returned a verdict of “Accidental Death” …
