NEWTON v. DARTMOUTH, Despite the wet weather on Saturday there was a good attendance on the Teign Marshes, to witness the first meeting of these teams for the season. The ground was but slightly affected by the continuous rain which fell during the week. Punctual to time the teams turned out as follows” NEWTON: W. H. Pinsent, back; V. S. Pictor, W. M. Greenfield, C. S. Elwell, and I. Pearse three-quarters: C. Wells and W. H. White halfbacks; F. J. Sellicks (captain), R. Dunn, A. H. M Cox, G. Cowley, W. G. Elliott, W. Curtis, T. Burns, and R. L. Hobson, forwards. DARTMOUTH: Bell, back; Sims, Tresidder, Ash, and Wetberdon, three-quarters; Howard and Knapman, half-backs; Ellis, Dunn, Hesse, Moore, Hellier, Thorne, Prowse, and Perring, forwards: Referee — H. R. Beer, Torquay: Dartmouth defended the town goal, and had the wind at their backs. Sellicks kicked off, Howard returning to Pearse who was collared before he could get in his kick. The Dartmouth forwards immediately rushed the ball down to the Newton line, where some hot work took place. Pinsent made a short kick from his own line, and Dartmouth being awarded a free kick Tresidder placed a goal within a minute of the start. Pearse punted strongly, and Pinsent put in a good left foot kick to touch. Wells did ditto, and Elliott ran over the Dartmouth line only to be whistled back. Quick work by Dartmouth forwards; and a run by Knapman almost resulted in the visitors scoring. The Newton pack regained the lost ground, and excellent passing was exhibited by the home three-quarters, but all attempts on their part to score were frustrated. Just before the interval there was one really exciting moment, Pictor intercepting a pass and running so well that he seemed bound to score a try, but when only a yard from the line he was pulled down by Sims. Even play followed the re-start. After Dartmouth had saved from an attempt place goal by Greenfield from a mark by Dunn, Wells got away sharply from a scrum, and transferred at the right moment to Pictor, who ran with a try, amidst the cheers the spectators. Greenfield’s kick failed. White got away in a similar manner and ran to within five yards of the line, where Bell pushed him into touch. The home team still continued to press. The visitors saved from flying kick by Pictor. Another display of passing by Newton resulted in Greenfield getting over the line, the same player kicking a fine goal. Dartmouth held their own for a time, but from punt by Wells, Bell failed to reply and from the succeeding scrum White came away along the touchline and scored Newton’s third try. Greenfield made a good but unsuccessful attempt goal. The game ended in a win for Newton, the scores being Newton, 1 goal, 2 tries (11 points: Dartmouth, 1 penalty goal (3 points). … also … Newtonians v.
