Torquay Athletic v. Newton: At Plainmoor, Torquay, on Saturday, the Athletic Club wiped out their defeat by Newton a few weeks since, winning against the same Club by three tries to nothing. The feat was witnessed by large and enthusiastic crowd spectators. The home team, for whom Chipman, Davies, Williams, Hawkings, and Vanstone did well, had the best of the play throughout. Among the visitors Pictor, Pearse, Donaldson, and Sellicks were conspicuous for good work. Two tries were scored by Davies and one by Kitto. Teams: Torquay Athletic: Harry, back; Williams, Harding, Olver, and Kitto, three-quarter backs; Chipman and Davies, halfbacks; Hawkings, Vanstone, Butland, Doble, H. Brooking, Roberts, Cann, and M. Brooking, forwards. Newton: Pinsent, back; Greenfield, Pearce, Wells, and Pictor, three quarter backs; Donaldson and White, hall backs; Bellicks, O’Neil, Cowley, Hobson, Curtis, Dunn, Burns, and Elliott, forwards.

Football: The composition of the Newton team is somewhat uncertain, owing to the fact that Newton College are playing a team of Old Newtonians on the College ground. This will probably deprive Newton of the services of H. B. Taylor (who gained his “blue” at Cambridge and played v. Oxford on Wednesday) and C. L. Donaldson. A H. M. Cox is ill with Quinsey. The probable team will be: Pinsent, Greenfield, Elwell, Pearce, Pictor, Wells, White, Sellicks Burns, Ellion, Hobson, Dunn, Curtis, Cowley and Baker.

Newton v. Torquay Athletic: Much interest was centred in the first meeting of these teams for the season on the Teign Marshes on Saturday, the visitors coming with a reputation which entitled them to their claim of being considered in the forefront of Devon Clubs … … Newton: W. H. Pinsent, Back; W. M. Greenfield, V. S. Pictor, C. Wells and C. L. S. Elwell, three-quarters; W. H. White and C. L. Donaldson, half-backs, F. J. Sellicks (capt.), W. G. Ellliott, R. Dunn, G. Pinsent’s last kick in the game sent the ball from his own twenty-five over the Torquay line, Torquay saving. … …
