Uplowman: … … The wedding took place at Uplowman Church of Miss Beatrice Mary Drew, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Drew, of Prickly Pear Blossom Cottages, Uplowman and Leading Stoker Sydney James Pinsent (sic) of H.M.S. Conqueror. The bride entered the Church resting on the arm of her father, who gave her away, and she wore a costume of ivory crepe de chene, with wreath and veil, and carried a lovely bouquet of cream roses, white carnations, and narcissus. The bridesmaids were the four sisters of the bride. Misses Florence and Maud Drew wore dresses crepe gretta, with hats to match. Misses Elsie and Dorothy Drew wore dresses of blue silk poplin, with hats to match. All four carried bouquets of daffodils and maidenhair. The best man was Pte. Ernest Drew, of the 8th Devons. The bride’s gift to the bridegroom consisted of a gold chain and cross, and the bridegroom’s gift to the bride was a gold brooch. A reception was afterwards held at the residence of the bride. The presents were many and useful. A merry peal was rung as the happy couple left the Church. The honeymoon is being spent in Torquay.

Uplowman: A new piano for Uplowman day school has been the ambition of Miss Yeoman (headmistress) and the school managers for some considerable time and many commendable efforts have been made to this end. The piano was on view in the schoolroom on Friday, when another whist drive was held for this purpose, and a further £2 10s realised for the fund. Door steward and M.C. was Mr. F. Uplowman: A well-attended whist drive was held in Uplowman Schoolroom on Friday, organised by Miss Yeoman (headmistress), in aid of a new piano for use in the school. There were thirteen tables in play, and Mr. J. Pearcey was the M.C. The prizewinners were: — Ladies: 1, Mrs. Palk; 2, Mrs. Willis (after cut with Mrs. Perkins (Holcombe Rogus); consolation. Mrs. F. Norman. Gents: 1, Mr. S. J. Pinsent, 2, Mr. A. W. Parsons (Ashbrittle); 3, Mr. R. Rowsell; consolation. Mr. F. Broomfield. The miniature whist was run by Mr. F. Norman, the winner being Mrs. Pearcey (Coombe). A mystery box was run by Miss Yeoman, and the content (a mouse trap) was rightly guessed by Miss W. I. Kingdom. Refreshments were served by Mrs. F. Norman, Mrs. Fowler, Mrs. Langdon, the Misses Cleeve, and S. Willis. Mr. S. Fowler was the door steward.
