Mr. R. M. Pinsent, who has joined the South African Mounted Police, leaves Southampton in the “Manchester Merchant ” at 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday. …

(elsewhere) … On Thursday evening the members of St. John’s Church choir met at Pomeroy House, the residence of Rev. H. E. Egremont, curate in charge, and presented Mr. R. M. Pinsent, who has been a member of the choir for some time and who is leaving for South Africa, with a gold sovereign purse. In making the presentation on behalf of the members of the choir, the Rev. H. Egremont said that they were sorry to lose one of their members, who was always in regular attendance at the services, and who was also so popular with the members. He trusted that the sovereign purse would never be empty and wished Mr. Pinsent every prosperity in his new sphere of labour, and a safe return. Mr. Pinsent thanked the members for their very kind present, although he did not know what he had done to deserve such recognition. He alluded to the very pleasant time which he had spent in the choir, and said that if he was spared to return, he should be pleased to be able to assist the choir again. In felicitous terms Mr. W. J. Philhpe, who organised the presentation, proposed the health of Mr. Pinsent, and he briefly replied.

Totnes: At Totnes, Thursday evening, a farewell dinner was given to Mr. R. M. Pinsent, a prominent member of the Totnes Football and Cricket Clubs, and Mr. C. Hains, second son of Dr. Hains, late of Totnes, who are shortly sailing to join the South African Mounted Police. The mayor (Mr. T. W. Windeatt) presided over a good company at the Commercial Hotel, and, after alluding to the pluck they had exhibited in volunteering for service, said the presentation to them represented the outward and visible sign of their friendly feeling. As Mayor, he wished them “God speed” and prosperity in the name of the ancient borough and its inhabitants, and handed each purses of £5 10s, subscribed for by their friends. Both recipients, who were loudly cheered, acknowledged the gifts, which they said would remind them of the friends in Totnes. The health of the mayor was given by Mr. W. F. Tollit, and acknowledged by his Worship, who, at a later stage, proposed The Devonshire Regiment and the Totnes boys at the front,” to the splendid service of the Devon Regiment in South Africa, and asked for contributions to the Christmas presents which were to be sent out to them by the Mayoress.

Rugby: At Paignton the home team and Totnes played a pointless draw. Keenly contested, the game was a good one, and very interesting to watch. Perhaps the homesters had a slight advantage on the play, but a draw was a most satisfactory conclusion for both teams. For Totnes, Adams, Pincent, Windeatt and Searle shone, while Horsham’s tackling for Paignton was very fine. Webber was a good back. Boles and Blake did some excellent footwork among the home forwards.
