Totnes Weekly Times: Saturday 4th November 1899

Plymouth v. Totnes: At Totnes, on Saturday … (detailed description of the game) … Dean was again of great assistance to his side, Pinsent sending the ball to touch before Plymouth could go far … … Totnes put Plymouth on the defence, Beasley clearing beautifully. Totnes had the worst of the next scrums, Plymouth keeping them defending. Plymouth was safe, however. … The Plymouth quarters tried passing and Mills dropped for goal right before the uprights, the ball going under the bar. Knott collared Bryant when he looked dangerous, and the ball went to Pinsent, whom several Plymouthians tried in vain to collar. The home tackling was very smart … Play came to the centre where Elias missed, for Pinsent to gather …

(elsewhere) … Pinsent came out at the last moment, as back for Totnes, and proved very safe. He is not fast, but his kicks generally find touch, and he is good at stopping rushes. … …

Reserves: the game between Totnes Reserves and Newton Church Institute was forward throughout and was very fast. The home men appeared like they were carrying all before them and up to half time there was no doubt that they were far better than the visitors, changing over with a good lead. The second half brought about the triumph of training, for the visitors without much trouble held the Reserves well in check … … The forwards were fairly well matched – as already indicated they alternately held the balance. The brunt of the defence fell upon the full backs, Croote for the visitors and Pinsent for the homesters. Both did well and the latter, who had a particularly tough job, emerged with credit from the ordeal. …
