Totnes Weekly Times: Saturday 23rd February 1901

Totnes v. Albion Reserves, at Totnes: … (detailed description of game) … the homers again took up the attack, and after a scrum near the line, Hawkins got over in the corner. Pinsent failed to goal … Even play followed, and then good play by Pinsent and Salter stopped another attack by the visitors. The first named was brought down in possession. H. Tucker, however, managed to clear. Pinsent was again called upon and returned to touch. … Some capital passing then took the visitors to the home line, where they tried hard to score, Day being held by Pinsent as he was going over. Searle and Pinsent raised the siege, and the visitors were penalized …  … the visitors were undoubtedly superior outside the scrum and Bassett made many openings for them. The defense of Tucker, Searle and Pinsent was splendid. Stoyle and Kinsman were rarely called on to handle the ball. …

Rugby: Paignton v Totnes: At Totnes on Saturday: The homesters attacked early in the game, nearly getting over after a run by Marley. Webber saved smartly, and the Totnes quarters failing to handle neatly, the visiting up’s cleared and went right away to the other end, Yeoman scoring for T. Wyatt to goal. Totnes got on the offensive again, and after a vigorous attack in front of goal a forward touched down: Pinsent converting. Forward work helped Paignton down, and after some pretty outside play Drew dashed through and transferred to A Wyatt, who scored Paignton’s second try. At half time the visitors were leading by two goals to one. Totnes had the best of the second portion of the game and forced two saves. Windeatt got away cleverly and reached within a yard of the line. He was tackled, but Hingston touched down, and Pinsent’s kick equalised the score. For a time, play ruled fairly even at the centre, but Totnes got on the attack time after time, and made a big effort to notch a third try. They were unsuccessful, however, and the game ended in a draw of ten points each …

Dartmouth & South Hams Chronicle: Friday 25th January 1901

Football Notes: … (discussion of local teams and results) … The match between Dartmouth and Totnes was like most of the other matches on Saturday, played under miserable conditions … I was unable to go to Yeovers to see the match – circumstances prevented. Even had I known that Totnes were to be defeated so badly, I could hardly have gone … (recollections of other games and discussion of the game) … Somehow or other Mr. Referee generally managed to pick a nice pool (for scrums) in which the oval would well-nigh float …  The most important absentee from the Totnes team, an informant who has supplied me with the following details of the game says, was Pinsent, their back, and I can quite believe it, for judging by what I have heard he has been playing a smart game this season. Whoever was the Totnes back on Saturday, it is the opinion of my “shadow” that he was practically incompetent. “You only had to shout at him,” he adds, “and he would drop the ball.”. … ….

Totnes Weekly Times: Saturday 29th December 1900

Totnes v. Argyle: At Totnes on Saturday before a moderate gate … (detailed description of match.) … A good dribble by the visitors took play up the field in fine style and all the team but Pinsent was passed. He succeeded in turning the ball to touch … Helped by a penalty, Totnes attacked for a while, but by loose forward work, Argyle again forced play, and Pinsent just stopped them in time.

(elsewhere) … Members of the regular town XV figured on both sides, and behind the scrum the teams were very evenly matched … Neither Gibson nor Rowe at back distinguished themselves, but capital play was shown at three quarters by Pinsent, Tucker, Holmes and Bourne, for the Old Totnesians, and by L. Stoyle, Ford, Kinsman and E. Stoyle for the Town Club: … … Totnes v. Old Totnesians: Before a fair attendance on the afternoon of Boxing Day, Totnes met Old Totnesians for whom G. Windeatt kicked off, and Ford retained to the centre. Totnes rushed away, and L. Stoyle, fielding a return Gibson, ran over in the comer. Ford failed at goal. After the kick out, a series of scrums followed, and then Knott dribbled away. Elias replied with similar effort, and then the Old Totnesians broke right away dribbling over the line in the lower corner close to the flag, Bourne and Pinsent touching down together, but only a minor was given by the referee. The homesters had the worst of the ensuing play, in which Elias, Windestt, and Bourne were conspicuous. Then a dribble, well followed up, put the Totnes line in danger. They relieved, but the Old Totnesians marked, Pinsent having a long shot at goal, and Ford replying to the centre. Hains took play down the field again, and Hawkins dribbled to above the centre. E. Stoyle then kicked to the O.T. back, and Totnes attacked vigorously and forced a save. Tucker kicked out, but Totnes took up the attack again. Pinsent and Tucker helped the O.T. out but following a kick from a mark by E. Stoyle, Totnes scrummed close to the line. Hingston and Elias cleared, E. Stoyle cleverly checking near midfield. Totnes carried play along the touchline to close quarters, and the effort resulted in a dead ball. After the kick out, Knott made a smart run, but was checked outside the O.T. line, and Elias replied with a fine dribble. Salter made a capital run, but his pass at the critical moment was missed. Totnes scrummed on the line, but by bad passing lost ground. The O.T. looked like breaking away clear, but E. Stoyle and L. Stoyle showed good play, and Totnes still kept on the attack, a minor following Kinsman’s attempt at goal from a. free kick. Ford gave Totnes the advantage again, but a forward pass robbed them of a try after some good handling, and J. Windealt punted to touch in the O.T. 35. Half time was then whistled. Knott re-started for Totnes, Kingston returning, and the ball going to touch at the centre. Blackler and Butcher led an attack on the O.T. line, but the passing by Totnes broke down and they lost ground. A miss by Elias let them into the O.T, 29, where Gibson kicked to touch, Elias, Windeatt and Pinsent did some passing for the O.T. but they could not clear until punted out. Poor passing by Totnes was compensated for by an excellent kick by Kinsman, and a tricky run by L. Stoyle, which left the town club attacking. Knott put in a well-judged dribble to the line, but in the scramble, he was checked as he was going over. Ford tried to drop a goal, and the hall went under the bar. Following the kick out, Hains, Bennett and Hingston took the Old Totnesians above the centre, and Pinsent got away well, but was badly supported, Ford intercepted and kicked out. Windeatt charged down a kick by Marley, but a lucky “flyer” by Rowe kept the Totnes line intact. Tucker then stopped a run. Marley dribbled on, but Hingston responded with a similar effort for the O.T. Slow passing let Windeatt and Elias in, and they put Totnes on the defence, good rush clearing. Windeatt led a dribble, which Ford stopped in front of the Totnes goal and then Windeatt, Elias and Holmes put in some passing, the latter being almost over. Salter dribbled out, but Dennis took the play back to Totnes’ quarters again. Marley, however, managed to clear and with a rush went below the centre again. Windeatt dribbled away back, and Rowe checked under difficulties. Totnes relieved but J Wiudeatt led another attack and Marley kicked out. Totnes with a rush reached O.T.’s 25, but Mitchelmore smartly cleared to the centre. L. Stoyle made a dashing run, but there was no one to take his pass, and J. Windeatt intercepted. A rush headed by Hingston took play to Totnes lines one more, but Totnes raised the siege and the game ended in a win for them by a try to nil Mr. S. Kinsman officiated as referee.
