Swimming: Devon County A.S.A: The committee of the Devon County A.S.A. met at Teignmouth on Wednesday. Mr. F. Lear (president) occupied the chair … The final tie of the Devon School’s team race competition takes place at Torquay on Tuesday: The Hon. Secretary reported that F. Foot, M. Horswell, W. King, A. S. Syms, C. Wilson, F. Beavans, R. M. Pinsent, G. Foot, Rumbulow, all of Totnes, and W. G. Rogers of Buckfastleigh, were competitors in unregistered swimming matches held in connection with the Totnes Regatta. He had written to the Regatta secretary, pointing out the necessity of registration in the interest of the swimmers and the promotion of the pastime. To this a reply was received, stating that the committee would consider the matter. On the proposition of Mr. Tucker, seconded by Mr. Hutchings, it was unanimously resolved that all the swimmers named be suspended from further competition as amateurs. …

Totnes and Bridgetown Royal Regatta: … … Pair-oared Race: Open to residents of the Borough of Totnes under 20 years of age, to be rowed in pleasure boats not less than 3 ft 6 in beam with coxswain: 25s: Ida, H. Sums, A. Sims, E. Sims (cox)… 1: Lark: R. M. Pinsent, W. J. Gibson, F. Rapson (cox) … 2; 10s, Florence, A. J. Abbot, t. Abbot, R. Taylor (cox) … 3. The course was the same as in the first race. The Lark was left at the starting point, there being a difficulty with the rowlock of the stroke, and by the time this was overcome the others were a good distance ahead. Ida leading the way from Florence. After turning the St. Peter’s Quay mark boat, Ida came away with a long lead, and was never in danger and won by 80 yards. The race really was for second place. The crew of Florence kept it for some time, but could not stay the course, and were a poor third. …

Totnes Regatta: Totnes and Bridgetown Royal Regatta took place yesterday in showery weather. Keen interest was shown in the form of Totnes, Paignton, Torquay, and Dartmouth, especially the two last-named, who were to appear in their new boats. Unfortunately, however, for the Toquinians, they had their four-oared gig irretrievable damaged by a collision with a tree while proceeding to the Quay on the Bridgetown side … (description) … Pair-oared Race, open to residents of the Borough of Totnes: 1, Ida (H. Totnes v. Devon County Asylum: At Totnes on Thursday, in fine weather. The home team went to the wickets first, but Pinsent was quickly dismissed, being clean bowled by Dr. Davis before he had scored. … The Asylum made a very poor stand against the bowling of Tucker and Pinsent, each of whom captured four wickets cheaply, whilst Berry took two wickets for two runs. … Dr. Davis in the last two balls of the Totnes innings obtained two wickets, and curiously enough Pinsent took two of the visitor’s wickets with the last two balls of the game: Scores: Totnes: 118 all out (R. Totnes v. H.M.S. Britannia 2nd XI: At Dartmouth on Wednesday and resulted in an easy win for the visitors. Totnes went in first and had the misfortune to have Pinsent run out before they commenced scoring. J. B. Maye and Rev. H. S. Prinsep batted well and before they separated 93 runs had been obtained … (description of the game) … The home team fared badly before the bowling of Pinsent for they lost two wickets for none and three four, while seven were down for 23. Pinsent’s first four overs were maidens and in them he took three wickets, while in his last 17 balls he secured four wickets for two runs.
