Hockey Topics: … … Service Players: It is a tribute to the advance of Services hockey that six Army and Navy players find places in the Southern trial. Of these Commander Manners (centre forward), Commander Harbottle (full back) and Major Pinsent (centre forward) have been much to the fore in county games. Another new phase of the trial match is the inclusion of several London University players. Everywhere, it appears, the game is spreading and revealing new talent.

Mid Sussex Times: Tuesday 9th March 1920

Rugby: CUCKFIELD WELL BEATEN AT MARESFIELD: Cuckfield footballers took nearly a hundred supporters with them to Maresfield on Saturday for their re-play with the Signal Service Reserves in the fourth round of the Sussex Junior Cup. The result was a victory for the home team by three goals to none, and with Cuckfield’s retirement the last of the Mid-Sussex teams in this year’s competition departed. Whilst Cuckfield deserved to win in the first match at Ockenden Park, the same cannot be said of Saturday’s game, for they were outplayed and outweighed. The Signals had the good fortune to win the toss, and they made the most of their advantage of kicking with the wind. Langridge soon found he was going to have a busy afternoon, and he had several hot shots to deal with just after the start. Five minutes only had gone by, when Eynott, the homesters’ speedy outside-left, got in a long cross-shot, which, helped by the wind, completely deceived Langridge. Another five minutes and No. 2 was scored. The home team forced a corner which Eynott placed accurately for Evans to convert. The Signals forwards played a vastly improved game to that of fortnight ago, Major Pinsent leading the line well and giving his wingmen every opportunity. It was the centre forward who footed the third goal at the end of fifteen minutes’ play. After this point rain commenced to come down in torrents and continued for the remainder of the match, and the crowd, which had numbered nearly a thousand, rapidly dwindled away. … (continues similarly)…
