Western Gazette: Friday 5th October 1894

Yeovil v. Axminster (R.): These XV’s tried conclusions on the latter’s ground on Saturday, when a good game was witnessed, Axminster having got together a strong team. At halftime neither side had scored, the homesters playing their best, especially noticeable being the passing of the three-quarters, but afterwards they fell to pieces: Tries were obtained by Chapman and Bartlett, Farrant each time making splendid attempts to convert, the ball just falling beneath the cross-bar. Farrant also met with similar luck when he tried to drop a goal. The game thus resulted in a win for Yeovil two tries to nil. The teams were: Yeovil: Back, H. Farrant; three-quarter-backs, C. Gaylard, S. G. Manfield, F. Bicknell, and Hamblin; half-backs, W. H. Chapman and A. Bartlett; forwards, W. H. Manfield (captain), L. C. Powys, G. Priddle, S. Martin, J. Curwood, Smith, Gough, and A. E. Bradford. Axminster: Back, J. Pinsent (captain); three quarterbacks, J. Williams, C. Gerrish, W. Head, and W. Dawson; halfbacks, Collins and Another; forwards, F. Restorick. A. Taylor, W. Mitchell, Pettinger, Cunningham, W. Roads, H. Clarke, and W. Potbury.
