Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: Friday 30th October 1885

Conservative Demonstration at Newton Abbot: Disgraceful behaviour of the Radicals: A great meeting of the Conservatives of the Teignbridge Division was held at Newton Abbot on Saturday in connexion with the formal opening of the Constitutional Club and in support of the canditature of Mr. W. J. Harris, M. P. The programme commenced with the opening of the Club noon. This was followed by a luncheon at half-past one o’clock, and a public meeting at half past three. The proceedings were very numerously attended throughout, and the two first events passed off without opposition; but not so the public meeting, at which the Radicals mustered in strong force, and, in the end created a most unseemly and disgraceful disturbance. Their conduct most cowardly and, make what excuses they will, must reflect lasting disgrace on the town and their own party. Not content with disturbing the meeting, and continually interrupting the speakers, they evidently intended to try and carry a resolution adverse to Mr. Harris but the uproar they created defeated their own ends for when the motion was proposed and seconded and a Mr. Martin rose up to move an amendment, the din was so great that he could not be heard, and the motion was declared carried … The luncheon was held at the Globe Hotel and about 200 persons sat down to it. The Earl of Devon presided and was supported on his right by Sir John H. Kennaway, Bart. M. P., Mr. W. J. Harris, M. P., Mr. W R. Hole, J. P., and Mr. H. Studdy, J.P., while on his left were Sir Samuel Baker, J. P., Mr. D. R. Scratton, J. P., Mr. H. S. Northcote, M. P., and Sir Cornelius Kortwright. The Rev. G. T. Warner occupied the vice-chair and there were also present Colonel Tombs, General Riach, Major St. Clair, M. P., B. Ellicombe, J. P., Admiral Cornish-Bowden, J. P., Colonel Tickell, Dr. H. S. Gaye, J. P., the Revs. W. Moyle, S. G. Harris, A Pope, C. Wolston, B. W. Wrey, E. Harcourt, General Reynell-Taylor, J.P., Captain Kitson, Mr. H. E. Brown, J. P., Dr. Pope, Dr. Grimbly; Messrs. G. B.
