Victoria Grounds, Knighton Road: Notwithstanding the bad weather and other drawbacks, there was a average attendance on these grounds last Saturday to witness the decision of a 200 yards’ dog handicap promoted by Mr. J. Mason, and which was put through all its stages: There was a good entry and the racing witnessed in the second round and final of a close and interesting character. The final resulted with a dead heat between Newbold’s Jim and Pincent’s Turpin, the first named winning the run-off by half a yard …

Victoria Grounds: This ground, which has lately been transferred to Mr. J. Mason, who is well known among the local frequenters of sports, was the scene of a 200 years’ dog handicap, organised by Mr. Vincent (sic). The preliminary portion of the handicap was run a week since, leaving the second round and final for last Saturday. These were well contested. The weather was fine but there was only moderage attendance: Heat 1 … Heat 3; Argyle’s Nell, 8 1⁄2, 77½, 1; Pincent’s Turpin, 18 ½, 23, 2; Green’s Punch, 21 ½, 21, 3; Won by four yards, a yard and a half divided second and third … (continues) … Mr. D. Victoria Grounds: A 200 yards’ dog handicap, organised by Mr. J. Pincent, for which £6 in prizes is offered, was commenced at the Victoria Ground, Knighton-road, on Saturday afternoon. Despite the heavy downpour there was a good attendance of dog fanciers, and the racing, although only the preliminary portion of the handicap was run, was very closely contested. The card contained 69 entries, and out of these a fair number competed in each heat. Details:  … Heat 6: Hallam’s Hamlet, 20, 24, 1; Room’s Lill, 17, 35, and Phipps’ Joe, 17 1/4, 38 1/2, dead heat for second place; won by a yard and half: Heat 7: Pincent’s Turpin, 18 1/2, 23, 1; Sykes’ Pose, 15, 30, 2; Hill’s Jack, 22, 45, 0; won on the tape … The second round and final will be run at the end of this week. Mr. D. Muddimore was the referee. Mr. G. Pincent fired the pistol, and Mr. Capewell attended at the mark.
