Totnes Weekly Times: Saturday 15th September 1900

Accident at Bovey Tracey: Mr. Sidney Hacker (district coroner) held an inquest at Wifford Lodge, Bovey Tracey, on Monday, into the cause of death of Aaron Stonelake, aged 14 years. It appeared from the evidence of John Pinsont and his son-in-law, Henry Black (who resides at the Lodge), that on Saturday afternoon deceased and a young man belonging to Heathfield were both riding one horse, and when passing near the Lodge both, by accident, fell from the horse, which must either have kicked or trodden upon deceased’s head, which was seriously cut. Dr. Stewart was at once summoned, who, after examination, pronounced recovery hopeless, but ordered that the lad should not be moved (he had been laid on the kitchen floor), and that a nurse should be obtained. By some unfortunate misunderstanding or accident no nurse was obtained, and on Sunday afternoon the poor lad died. The coroner expressed surprise that Bovey Tracey had no mortuary or parish nurse. The verdict of the jury (of which Mr. G. Bond was foreman) was Accidental death,” but they added a rider that the parishioners ought to provide & mortuary and also parish nurse. Deceased was an orphan.
