Death of an Old Resident: Mrs. Hannah Pinsent: We regret to record the death, which occurred on Sunday, of Mrs. Hannah Pinsent, wife of Mr. James Walter of “St. Mildred’s” The Downs, Beacon Hill, Herne Bay, at the age of seventy-six. Mr. and Mrs. Pinsent came to reside at Herne Bay thirty-six years ago and took up residence on the East Cliff at a time when there were only three houses there, and no main roads. They have thus seen the remarkable growth which has taken place in that part of the town. In those days Mr. and Mrs. Pinsent came down for the summer months, and they took up permanent residence some eleven years ago, when Mr. Pinsent retired from business in London. They have, during their residence here, actively identified themselves with the mission which started in Beltinge some years ago by members of the Baptist community. Mrs. Pinsent’s indifferent health, however, curtailed her activities in social matters, but she always took a keen interest in the mission and in the growth and welfare of the town. Mrs. Pinsent leaves two daughters, one of whom is Mrs. Mortlock, wife of Mr. H. R. Mortlock. who is well-known for his association with the Bohemians and other organizations. The funeral took place on Thursday at the Southgate Cemetery, North London.

Question of Appointment: A Technical Objection Upheld: A Long Hearing at the St. Augustine’s Session: A case of great interest and of some importance locally occupied the attention of the magistrates at the St. Augustine’s Petty Sessions, Canterbury on Saturday. The Bench had been asked to hear and determine objections to private street works proposed to be carried out at Beacon Hill and Beacon Hill Parade, Herne Bay, the provisional apportionment being the principal point in dispute. The frontagers concerned were Messrs. J. W. Pinsent, H. A. Floate, J. Hingston, A. Baldwin, E. Scott, A. T. Dence, H. T. Freshwater, A. V. Stokes, C. T. Smith, H. G. Pitt, F. A Wood and the executors of Mr. Aduey Payne (Messrs. W. A. Payne and W. Gibbons). Many of these gentlemen were present in Court, and several Herne Bay residents and ratepayers as this matter has received a great deal of attention. The hearing was a lengthy one, extending throughout the day, as the Bench did not rise till past half past four. … continues … …  (long discussion on plans to build a road which the residents said they did not need and they should not have to pay for) … …

Nearly A Blaze: There was a narrow escape of a serious fire at St. Mildred’s, the residence of Mr. Pinsent, on Good Friday morning, He was burning some rubbish at the back of the house when a stronger gust of wind than usual blew the burning material to the drawing room windows. A coal box caught fire, the window panes caught alight, and the flames reached the bedroom windows. Mr. Pinsent shouted for help, and Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Hingston and Mr. Scott went to his assistance with pail-fulls of water; but at the twelfth pailful the supply ran short. Fortunately, the fire had then been got under. The incident, however, would seem to enforce the necessity of a constant supply of water, and the placing of a fire hydrant and a fire alarm at this end of the town.
