D. Marris, D. H. Pinsent, and C. E. Winn. … … David Hume Pinsent is native of Birmingham, having been born Edgbaston, May 24, 1891, and now resides in Lordswood Road. Harborne, Birmingham. He is the son of Mr. Hume Pinsent. After being at school Lambrook, Biacknell, Berkshire, he passed on to Marlborough, where he won Senior Mathematical Scholarship and a number of mathematical prizes. Birmingham University: At the annual meeting of the Court of Governors of the University of Birmingham, on Monday, Professor Gilbert Barling was elected Vice-Chancellor, in the room of the late Alderman Beale to whose work a graceful tribute was paid by many of the Governors present. The new Vice-Chancellor dwelt at some length on the financial position of the University as affected by the Exchequer and municipal grants; and Sir Oliver Lodge and Mr. Hume Pinsent also spoke of the work and needs of the Institution.

Birmingham University: Meeting of the Board of Governors: Dr. Barling Appointed Vice Chancellor: … … Then came the suggestion that Dr. Gilbert Barling should allow himself to be nominated, and that had met with very general approval. He was no stranger either to those in Birmingham or in the area this University covered. Personally, Alderman Clayton said he thought it would be advantageous to have at their head one who knew the working of the University from the academic point of view. The Treasurer (Mr. Hume C. Pinsent) seconded the resolution proposed by Alderman Clayton. Mr. Pinsent referred to the irreparable loss sustained by the University in the death of the late Vice-Chancellor. Speaking of Dr. Barling’s qualifications, Mr. Pinsent described them as interested in, and knowledge of, the academic and scientific position, sympathy and tact in dealing with men, and experience in affairs. The resolution was unanimously carried, and Dr. Gilbert Barling, wearing his robes, was conducted to the chair by the principal (Sir Oliver Lodge) and Mr. Pinsent. Alderman Clayton, in greeting him, said he congratulated him on his election, that the traditions gradually growing around them would be transmitted him to his successor undimmed, and he further Assured him that all who had been intimately connected with the work of the University would offer him every assistance in their power. …

The Council’s Grant: Dealing with the report of the council of the University, Professor Baring spoke in appreciation the annual grant of £15,000 from the City Council, and made special reference an, offer of £500 per annum from the coal owners of the South Midland District, applied partly for stipend attached a lectureship in mine rescue work the area covered by the South Midland District, the lectureship to be connected with the Department of Mining in the University and partly for travelling expenses to and from mine rescue stations, etc. was very gratifying find that the coal owners appreciate what they were trying in the University in connection with mining matters. In seconding the Vice-Chancellor’s proposition to adopt the Councils report, Mr. Pinsent spoke of the need of an increase in the endowment fund applicable to stipends. He mentioned with gratification the donations of £3,000 from Mr. J. A. Kenrick and £1,000 from Mr. Edwin Malins. Mr. Pinsent referred to the unusual fact of a surplus this year of £2,500 but added that it did not represent the real state of the finances, and there were certain outgoings in the future which would quickly account for it. The University, he said, could only be carried on by very substantial grants from the nation and from the immediate locality. … …
