Peninsular and Oriental Company: The new screw steamer Hydaspes, of 2988 tons and 500 horsepower, under the command of Captain J. M. Treat to the Peninsular and Oriental School Children: On Thursday the children attending the Peninsular and Oriental Schools, situated in Anderson’s Terrace, were afforded a very liberal treat though the kindness of Mrs. Black, wife of Captain T. Black, the company’s superintendent at Southampton, and a lady who has taken considerable interest in the schools. … (decoration of the Boys and Girls schools) … In addition to these Mrs. Black had invited a large number of ladies and gentlemen to meet her, and they readily lent their assistance in the distribution of cake and other things. Trial of the P. and O. Steamer “Indus” … …  The company assembled on board to witness the trial included Mr. Hadow, the chairman of the Company, Admiral Sir Wm. Hall, Mr. Allen, Mr. Bayley, Capt. Engledue, Directors, Capt. Black, Superintendent at Southampton, Mr. Pinsent, Mr. Bethune, Capt. Jamieson, Capt. Curling, Capt. Weeks, Dr. Beattie, Mr. Peter Denny, the builder, and others. An excellent luncheon was served, and the toasts included success to the P. and 0. Company and the new ship, coupled with the health of the builder, Mr. Denny, who responded in a humorous speech; the health of the Directors, who were complimented on their efficient management; Capt. Greaves, and officers of the Indus.
