Western Times: Friday 8th October 1886

The Chudleigh District Agricultural Ploughing Matches take place on Thursday next, at Bovey Tracey, in fields kindly lent by Mr. H. Pinsent of Whitstone Farm, whilst the Cattle and Horse show will be held in a field near the station kindly lent by Mr. Joll. The committee has W.R. Hole as President, with Mr. Loveys, of Moreton, as Hon. Secretary. A good programme has been issued, and should the weather prove favourable the event will doubtless be attended with success. It is understood that some of the elite of the neighbourhood, including Lord Clifford and Mr. Seale-Hayne, M.P. have signified their intention of being present. Dinner will be served at the Dolphin Hotel Assembly Rooms by host Joll. There being good prizes offered some keen competition is expected. The Bovey Brass Band will be in attendance.

Mayor’s Day at Bovey Tracey: This time-honoured custom, shorn of all its glories except the inevitable dinner, was celebrated on Monday at Bovey Tracey. In former years a mounted procession, headed by a brass band, perambulated the streets, the borough bounds were beaten, and several other ancient but now obsolete practices were observed. Only the “day”, the mayor, and the dinner remain and the latter the principal feature of the occurrence, was well attended by the freeholders. The assembly place the Dolphin Hotel. In the absence of the Mayor (Jabez H. Mugford, Esq.), the chair was taken by Mr. H. Baker (ex-Mayor), supported his right by the Rev. J. Pearse, and the left by Mr. J. Chave, of Dunsford Mills, near Exeter; the vice-chair was filled Mr. Wm. Sparkes, in the absence of Mr. Thomas Crocker, bailiff; there were also present: Messrs. E. Endacott, W. Endacott, T. Bray, T. Loveys. G. Bond, W. Beer, A. Godsland, G. Andrews, W. Steer, J. Causley, J. Short, J. Moore, G. Edwards, S. Sly. W. Tucker, W. Bovey, H. Pinsent, B. Hill, W. Wyatt, G. Snell, T. Bovey Tracey: The half-yearly tithe audit was held at Mr. Joll’s Dolphin Hotel, yesterday, the Vicar (the Rev. C. L. Courtenay) being represented by Mr. H. Jarman. A substantial dinner was served. The chair was taken by J. H. Mugford (parish churchwarden), who was supported on the right by Mr. T. Crocker, and on the left by Mr. H. Baker. Mr. J. L. Joll (vicar’s churchwarden) occupied the vice-chair. There were also present Messrs. W. Barstow, H. Nugent, W. Mann, J. Mann, Trebble, W. Edwards, Dayment, Cleave, Philp, W. Beer, W. Aggett, R. Harvey, W. Stamp, B. Fry, T. W. Wayatt, G. and W. Hopkins, W. Tucker, L. Langworthy, D. Jarvis, W. Reaford, and others. The usual loyal toasts having been duly drunk, Mr. H. Pinsent proposed the “Bishop and Clergy,” which was responded to by Mr. Joll. The chairman next proposed the “Army and Navy,” which was responded to by Mr. R. Harvey. Mr. H. Baker proposed “The Churchwardens,” which was responded to by Messrs. Mugford and Joll. The chairman proposed the “Parochial Committee,” coupling with it the name of Mr. W. Mann, who responded. Songs followed by Messrs. W. Beer, Aggett, Joll, and others.
