Western Times: Friday 23rd June 1876

John Saunders and Thos. Causley was charged with having on the 4th June trespassed on land over which Mr. Mortimer had the shooting, in pursuit of conies. The land in question is in the occupation of Mr. Gilbert Pinsent, John Powell, gamekeeper to Mr. Mortimer, said he saw the defendants on the day in question seated by a rabbits’ hole on Mr. Pinsent’s land with a dog at their heels. They had neither ferret nor net with them. He saw no rabbits. Causley pleaded guilty, Saunders not guilty. They were each fined 5s 8d including costs.

Newton Board of Guardians: The weekly meeting of the Board was held on Wednesday, at the Workhouse. The Rev. Preb. Wolfe presiding. There waa a large attendance of guardians: Alleged neglect by a Medical Officer: the Board were engaged a considerable time in enquiring into a complaint brought by a woman named Pike, of Torquay, against Dr. Gill, the medical officer of the place. The complaint was made last week but adjourned until Wednesday in order that the woman and her witnesses and Dr. Gill might all attend before the board. Dr. Gill also wrote the Board last week complaining that on going to the women’s house she abused him. The woman stated that last Monday week she obtained a medical order from Mr. Tozer, the relieving officer, for Dr. Gill to attend her husband who had been taken ill and brought home from his work in a cab. Sent the order to Dr. Gill the same evening about seven o’clock but he did not come to see her husband until Tuesday at two o’clock. … (a quarrel ensued about the delay and quality of care he was giving her husband, the Board voted to censure Dr. Gill for the delay) … Mr. Pinsent asked what answer would be sent to the woman. This, however, was not answered and the Board passed to the order of the day. ….

Exeter Flying Post: 1st April 1885

Lady Day Vestries: KINGSTEIGNTON: Messrs. C. Knowles, P. B. Mann, G. Newcombe, G. Pinsent, and James Vallance were appointed to act as a Committee of Surveyors for the repair of the roads with a paid assistant at a salary of £10. This step had been made necessary by the dissolution of the Newton Highway Board. The assistant-overseer (Mr. S. Partridge) was unanimously appointed assistant-surveyor for the ensuing year. Messrs. W. F. Snow, G. Newcombe, John Stark, G. H. Hatherley and John Hern were nominated for overseers, and Messrs. F. H. Plumptre and G. Pinsent for guardians. A letter from the Teign Valley Railway Company was read concerning poor rates in arrears. Great satisfaction was expressed at the increased interest manifested by the large attendance of ratepayers.

Totnes Weekly Times: Saturday 14th March 1885

Lord Clifford and Mr. Seale Hayne at Kingsteignton: Lord Clifford, of Chudleigh, presided at a Liberal meeting held at Kingsteington on Tuesday evening in support of the candidature of Mr. Seale-Hayne, referring to Egyptian affairs, maintained that the Government had done their best, and that they were worthy in every respect of the confidence of the country. He accused the Conservatives of confining themselves to fault finding without doing anything to lessen the existing difficulties … (speech from Mr. Seale-Hayne and questions) … Mr. Plumtre proposed “That a parochial Liberal Association be formed in Kingsteington as a branch of the Teignbridge Liberal Association, and that the following gentlemen be appointed officers: President, Lord Clifford; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. H. Plumtre, G. D. Hatherly, E. Goddard, L. Bearne, s. Pinsent, and the Rev. R. W. Rowe; committee, Messrs. G. Pinsent, L. Townsend, F. Snow. C. Knowles, J. Vallance, G. Mattet, W. Luscombe, J. Phillips, Foote, Cornish, J. Hoew; hon. Secretary, Mr. W. Freestone.”
