The proposed Restoration of Bovey Tracey Parish Church: Animated Vestry Proceedings: The Meeting Adjourned: A meeting of parishioners was called at the Vestry Hall on Saturday for the purpose of considering the plans for restoring the chancel of the Parish Church. … (description of plan which would involve a change of seating) … … The meeting, one of the largest known in the parish for many years, was presided over by the Vicar, and amongst others present were … (list includes) … H. Pinsent and G. Pinsent … (heated discussion) … Mr. Bastow said he very much feared that the parish had travelled from real Protestantism to Popery since the present vicar had been in charge (hear, hear!). Mr. H. Pinsent called attention to the fact that he had been asked to attend the vote against the proposition by the gentleman who had that day brought forward the resolution (laughter). The Chairman said Mr. Sparkes had met with that conversion which he hoped would come upon them all (laughter) … It is probably that should the decision of the meeting go against the Vicar a poll will be demanded.

Lord Clifford presided … …  Mr. Seale-Hayne, who met with a cordial reception said he was afraid should signalise his first visit to Kingsteignton by making rather dry speech, but the fact was they had before them in that constituency a rather dry question — should they continue in the course of Trade which they had attained their present prosperity or were they follow the advice of the Hon. member for Poole — (laughter) — and return to Protection. … Mr. Knowles proposed, and Mr. Goddard seconded “That this meeting having heard the address of Mr. Seale-Hayne pledges itself to use the utmost endeavours to retain him as member for the proposed Teignbridge Division”. Demonstration: Great Procession: Great Success: The great demonstration which took place on Saturday in the capital of the County, in support of the Extension of the Franchise, will long be remembered by those who had the privilege of taking part in the proceedings and of witnessing its remarkable success. The large muster of well-dressed persons from all the principal towns of Devonshire, their march four deep, shoulder to shoulder, in a compact procession, the head of which was entering St. Sidwell’s at the same moment as the rear of the column came around from the Bonhay Road into Fore Street, the order which distinguished the movement through the day, the earnestness shown by the demonstrators, these circumstances could not fail to impress everyone and to win respect from opponents as well as friends. That the county leaders of the Liberal Party should be present was of course only natural, but tradesmen, mechanics and others mustered in their thousands … The Bovey Tracey detachment, nearly 100 strong, came to Exeter in breaks and had the honour of being the first to move the city with the sound of their music, their band playing lively tunes as they drove up through Fore-street at noon. In the procession they were preceded by a fine banner inscribed “Bovey Tracey Liberal Association” and then came the band; next a banner inscribed “The Franchise is Our Right” and another “Willing or Unwilling – Mend or End” In addition there were a couple of large flags … among those present were … G. Pinsent …
