The Madras Harbour: The Honorable Messrs. J. H. Garstin, C.I.E. and J. Grose last Saturday evening visited the Madras Harbour and were received by Mr. G. McWatters, the Chairman, Mr. A. Lee Pogson, the engineer, and Mr. C. Pinsent, the Secretary of the Madras Harbor Trust Board, who conducted the Honourable Members over the northern and southern groynes.

The Madras Harbour Trust Board: The porterage contract with Messrs. P. Ramanjaloo Naidu and Sons terminates today … (continues) … The coolies employed on the import porterage will be paid daily by the Harbour Trust Board, the men being in charge of a head cooly or maistry, one Mudden Singh, who will draw a monthly salary of Rs. 30. Mr. C. Pinsent, Secretary, on Wednesday caused a circular signed by himself to be published assuring the coolies that they will be paid punctually, and will be mulcted in the wages as some of them apprehended. The new scheme which has met with the approval of the Harbour Trust Board, though not formally sanctioned by Government, will be a tentative measure for six months, when it will be amended, or continued, or abolished as the experience of six months working may render desirable.

Notes of the Week: … Sir Alexander Rendel, the Consulting Engineer to the Secretary of State for India, who is at present inspecting the various Railway lines in India, etc., arrived in Madras on Sunday from Calcutta by the P. O. S. S. Peshawar. On Monday Sir Alexander, accompanied by Messrs. Pogson and Pinsent, inspected the whole of the Harbor Works, Workshops, etc., including also the northern and southern groynes over which the party were trollied. The general result of Sir Alexander’s close inspection of the Madras Harbour Works is understood to be that he approves of what has been done so far, and acquiesces in the proposal for an eastern, instead of a northern eastern entrance. …  …

Mr. C. Pinsent, Secretary and Traffic Manager, Madras Harbour Trust Board, having availed himself of six months furlough, left Madras for Bombay en route to England yesterday evening. Mr. F. H. Longhurst, the Harbour Engineer, acts for Mr. Pinsent without prejudice to his own duties, until the permanent Chairman of the Harbour, Mr. F. J. E. Spring, C.I.E., takes charge of his office under the new arrangement.
