Express and Echo: Friday 24th September 1886

Torquay: Belgrave Congregational Church was last evening reopened for worship after repairs and alterations. The edifice has been closed for the past few weeks to allow for its being cleaned and re-decorated. The ceiling has been ornamented in light blue panels, and the walls are painted a warm salmon tint. A lobby has been erected at the entrance, and the extra comfort obtained thereby will be much appreciated. The total cost is £250, and although the building is not completely finished, advantage has been taken of the presence of the Rev. Newman Hall, LL.B., of London, in Torquay on a visit, to secure his services in connection with the re-opening of the church for worship. Last evening the rev. gentleman preached in the chapel to a large audience, taking his text from 1 Corinthians i., 23, “We preach Christ crucified.” From these words the preacher delivered an earnest and impressive discourse, and at the close a collection was taken in aid of the funds to meet the expenditure made. The work of renovation has been in the hands of Mr. Smerdon, builder, and Mr. Pinsent, painter.

Those taking part on this occasion were Mrs. Stevenson and Mrs. Soper, the Misses Glendenning, Bond, Cold, Paramore, Morris, Pinsent, Webber and Messrs. Bond, Soper, R. Stevenson and Wilson, whose combined efforts made this concert one of the best of the series. The gathering had a special local interest, in as much as several of the prominent supporters are about to leave the neighbourhood …
