Western Times: Saturday 22nd February 1862

NEWTON ABBOT: Meeting of Turnpike Trustees: The monthly meeting of the Totnes and Bridgetown Turnpike Trustees was held at the Globe Hotel, Newton, when there were present — Mr. W. Creed (chairman), and Messrs. J. H. Whiteway, R. Robinson, E. Ford, J. Pidsley, T. Pinsent, J Vicary, B. (sic) Pinsent, and H. Bowden. The following resolutions were passed: – “That bills amounting to £59 18s, and contract money, 13s 4d, having been audited by the Finance Committee, and found correct, be paid.” “That a sum, not exceeding £500 be applied towards paying off deeds poll of the trust by composition; and that the necessary steps be taken for that purpose.”  “That a sum of £100 be applied towards paying deeds poll on Totnes-bridge, by composition.”  “That complaint having been made respecting the bad state of the roads at Kingsteignton, and the contractor having stated his inability carry out his contract (the price being too low), resolved that Mr. George Cole’s application to give up his contract for repairing his section of the roads be accepted, and that the Surveyor do at once take the necessary steps to put that portion of the road in repair.” Mr. J. Creed gave notice that he should, at the next meeting, move to rescind the resolution of the trustees to let the repairs of the road by contract, in respect of section No. 5. Mr. T. Pinsent also gave notice that he should, at the next general meeting, bring before the notice of the trustees the question of the tolls, with view to their reduction. The meeting then adjourned to Friday, the 7th of March, at the Seven Stars Hotel, Totnes. [see other issues on other dates]

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: Friday 8th February 1861

Newton Abbot: Annual Supper: The friends and customers of Mrs. Major, of the Commercial Hotel, supped together at her house, Friday evening last. The attendance was large and influential, and the supper was of a very superior description, reflecting much credit on the hostess. H. Shaw, Esq., ably officiated as chairman, J. Whiteway, Esq., (Fishwick), and Josiah Harris, Esq. (Ess Hill House), acting as vice-presidents. The following gentlemen constituted the Committee of Management: Mayor Yates, M. R. E., Captain Commanding 10th D.R.V., Messrs. E. C. Kent, J. Pinsent, Richard Ford, J. Barratt, F. Young, James Cull, F. Buckland, M. Tremain, G. Humberstone, W. Parker and W. Mudge. Amongst those present were also E. Prior, Esq., (Florian House), Dr. Manley (Ipplepen), General White and Messrs. R. Baker, J. Quicke, W. Lamble, L. Sweet Jun., N. Wakeham, Jun., P. S. Michelmore,  Jun., H. Budd, H. Magor, George Stockman, J. T. Cross, Cockrem, Davis, J. Parker, J. B. Blackler, S. Clarke, J. Mardon, Moysey, C. Rees and W. Williams. Upon the removal the cloth, the Chairman, after announcing that several gentlemen had been prevented attending through indisposition and other causes, gave the usual loyal toasts. Mr. J. Harris proposed the “Army and Navy.” The Chairman, who was greatly in applauded upon rising, replied in a spirited speech. Mr. F. Young next gave the “The volunteers of England,” coupling with the toast the names of Ensign Whiteway, of the 5th Mounted Rifles, and Ensign Baker, of the 10th Devon Rifles; both of whom spoke in return. Mr. James Cull next proposed the “Health of Mrs. Magor,” the hostess of the hotel, whom he complimented on her excellent entertainment on this and on former occasions, and likewise for the great attention she always paid to her customers generally. (Cheers.) Mr. H. Magor returned thanks in a suitable speech. Several other toasts having been given; the meeting separated.
