Shows of Light Horses: Exeter … … The harness classes were only moderately filled, both as regards numbers and quality. In the first for mares and geldings not exceeding 14.2 Mrs. C. Bell was first and third with Lady Wilton and Lady Dainty, both of whom are nice goers, the former having previously won in the pony broodmare class, and the two afterwards were placed first in local pairs. The pair was on this occasion divided by Mr. Huxham’s Lady Helen, another nice trapper. In the next group Mr. Swain Pincent was first and second with Lady Olivette and Hepstonstall Go-Lightly, two hackney’s with great action, which stood clear away from the remainder; and then in the open competition Miss Burston’s Maisey Dot defeated Messrs. Butcher and Weight’s Gentleman and England’s Caesar, the first two of whom were close together.

Field Topics of the Week: … Angling … Amongst the letters will be found a not unprofitably inquiry by “John Bickerdyke” into the characteristics of a Thames trout, a hint being cast forth that perhaps the fish may be descended from the sea trout. Another correspondent writes corroborating the remarks of Lady Pinsent concerning the illegal fishing on Newfoundland Rivers, and supplies an insight into affairs in that colony, which explain how much practices survive the laws promulgated to abolish them …

Rugby: Newton College v. Westward Ho: (R) The match between these school teams was looked forward to with the greatest amount of interest, and a large number of spectators assembled on the College ground to witness the game. The interest was enhanced by the fact that both teams had previously played Blundell’s School, Westward Ho being beaten by one point and Newton College drawing. An even game was then expected, and it was a great surprise to all concerned when Newton College won by five goals, one penalty goal, and two tries to nil. The combined play of the Newton halves, and the passing of the three-quarters, was far superior to that of their opponents. The Westward Ho forwards played a good, hard game, but had not the science and dribbling of the College. This is the second year that the College has not been beaten by any school in Devonshire. — Newton College Pinsent (back), Windsor, Wellen, Stock (three-quarter backs). Hammond, Light (half backs), O’Neill, Currie, V. Stuart, Avon-Jones, M. Everett, Lovett., Rutland, Champemaine, B. Everett (forwards). Westward Ho:  Hughes (back), Bellamy, Goodwin, Inglis (three-quarter backs), Hambly, Safford (half backs), Pike, McKenzie, Beamish, Evans, Betty, Bray, Welchman ma, and Welchman mi (forwards).
