BANK DIRECTORS ARRESTED: Warrants were issued on Saturday at St. John’s, Newfoundland, by Judge Conroy for the arrest of Sir Robert Thorburn, a former Prime Minister and member of the Newfoundland Legislative Council, the Hon. A. W. Harvey, Minister without portfolio in the present Cabinet, Mr. Donnelly, Receiver-General the last Cabinet, and Mr. Grieve, another leading politician, all being directors of the insolvent Union Bank, as well as Mr. Pinsent, manager of the bank. They are charged with issuing false balance-sheets in 1893 and 1894 on the affairs of the bank, and thereby inducing the plaintiffs and others to become customers, creditors, shareholders, whereby they were defrauded of large sums of money. Bail was accepted in two sureties of 18,000 dol. each and each director in 36,000 dol.

W. Donaldson of Newton was awarded first, Mr. P. H. Heaward, Second, and Mr. St. Maur third prize. In the poultry show, Mr. W. S. Pinsent was awarded first for dorkings, and Mr. W. S. Brewer first for Minorcas.

The Chairman understood that the letter was received in his (the Chairman’s) absence, and that the vice-chairman, Mr. W. S. Pinsent had instructed the Surveyor to see into the matter and inform Mr. Bedford of what had been done. Mr. S. Segar (Surveyor) who was present, explained that the matter had been seen to and steps were being taken.

The recent frost: A report received from Mr. a. Murrin as to steps taken for unfreezing the fire hydrants in compliance with a resolution of the council passed on February 16th, enclosing his account of payment to men and for coke: £3. 16s 10d. On the proposition of Mr. Pinsent, seconded by Rev. S. H. Harris, Mr. Murrin’s account was passed, and a hearty vote of thanks accorded Messrs. Murrin and Weatherdon for their services, and also Messrs. W. Haydon and J. G. White for the gratuitous loan of fire baskets. Mr. Murrin was voted £1 for his services in connection with the unfreezing of the hydrants on the motion of Mr. C. G. Vicary, seconded by Mr. Pinsent.
