Schools and Bird Protection: The Royal Society for the Protection of Wild Birds report that the silver medal, the first award in the Senior Division Essay Competition, open to Public Schools, was won by R. J. F. H. Pinsent, of Kings School, Canterbury, who wrote on the nesting sites of the Raven, Dipper, Brown Owl, Grey Wagtail, Lesser Tern and Herring Gull. Though Kent did not compete in the County Competition for Elementary Schools, several Kent schools obtained awards in the open Class, including Bekesbourne, which obtained an H.C. and C.

Pinsent was called to the Bar in 1856, appointed a member of the Newfoundland Legislative Council in 1859, was created a Queen’s Counsel in 1865, and a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court in 1880, and received the degree of D.C.L. at Lambeth Palace in 1881.
