Bideford: Christmas Day in the Workhouse: On the morning of Christmas day, the whole of the adults was, by order of the Guardians, presented with a half pint of strong ale for lunch, and at dinner they were liberally supplied with beef, vegetables, plum pudding and beer …. (dance and later) … Miss Pyncent a lady from Westward Ho! presented all those who could read with a new book each, and the children with a currant-bun. The whole of the inmates appeared highly gratified with their treat.
