Corner Improvement: George Street and Park Lane Widening: Objections at Inquiry: Objections to the proposed acquisition of property on the Corner of George Street and Park Lane were heard by a Government Inspector at an inquiry held at the Croydon Town Hall on Friday by direction of the Ministry of Transport. The proposal was rendered necessary in the view of the Council in order to effect certain improvements by setting back frontages for the relief of traffic at the junction of George Street and Wellesley Roars and Park Lane. A compulsory purchase order was made in respect of this corner in November. Mr. Edward Haines, Assistant Town Clerk, appeared for the Council, while on the objecting side Mr. Graham Mould represented Mrs. Pipon (the freeholder), the Croydon Royal Arch Building Society and Nichols (Croydon) Ltd.; Mr. H. Victor Pinsent represented Mrs. A. E. Eve; and Coun. T. H. Brain represented the Croydon Vigilance Association. … (long discussion of the need for a change to the corner and some discussion of the amount of land required) … Mr. Pinsent asked the Inspector to represent to the Minister that, if the acquisition were affected, the Council should give some definite idea of the date when the scheme would be proceeded with. After Mr. Haines had briefly replied to objections, the Inspector closed the inquiry.
