A Rating Question: At the Stourbridge Petty Session, on Friday in last week, before Colonel Fletcher, colonel J. B. Cochrane, and Mr. A. F. Godson, M.P., a case which has been before the Bench previously was called on, in which Mr. C. P. Noel was summoned by the Overseers of Belbroughton for a poor rate of £9 5s, on the Yew Tree House, which forms part of his estate. Mr. Waldron appeared for the Overseers, and Mr. Pinsent (Birmingham) for the defendant … (property was about ten acres and the house was untenanted) … Mr. Pinsent urged that there was no beneficial occupation whatsoever by Mr. Noel. Several cases bearing on the point were referred to, and in the end the Bench decided to make an order for the payment of the rates.

Death of Sir Thomas Chavasse:  Fatal Result of an Accident: Public Benefactor: It is with deep regret that we record the death of Sir Thomas Chavasse, which occurred on Monday night at his residence, Linthurst Hill, Barnt Green, in his 59th year. The sad intelligence did not reach Bromsgrove until Tuesday Morning, and as the news spread unfeigned sorrow was expressed upon all hands. Bromsgrove Board of Governors: … … Mental Cases: The Local Government Board forwarded extracts from the report of their Commissioner, Mrs. Pinsent upon a visit she paid to the Workhouse on August 29th. She reported she was satisfied that all the certified cases, four males were treated with kindness and consideration. She mentioned seven other cases which, in her opinion were certifiable. Upon the recommendation of the House Committee, it was decided to ask the Medical Officer to report upon the latter cases.

Northfield Cycling Fatality: The Inquest: Barnt Green Motorist’s Evidence: Coroner’s Jury’s Comment: The circumstances under which Mr. Frederick Brookes (234) a clerk in the employ of the Austin Motor Company, who resided at Moseley, met his death while cycling along the Bromsgrove Road at Northfield on Wednesday, were investigated by the City Coroner at the Victoria Courts, on Friday in last week. Mr. Maddocks (instructed by Messrs. Pinsent and Co.) appeared for Mr. A. J. Astbury of The Cottage, Barnt Green, the owner and driver of the car which was involved in the accident. Mr. E. The Telephone in Birmingham: The Birmingham Post says – “We understand that company is about to be established in Birmingham under the title of “The Midland Telephone Exchange Company Limited” with Mr. George H. Chubb (who has recently been conducting telephone experiments already noticed by us as one of the directors; Mr. Henry J. T. Pierce of the town as managing director; and Messrs. Barlow, Smith and Pinsent as solicitors. The undertaking will be associated with the Telephone Company, London. It is intended, we believe, to commence with centres both at Birmingham and Wolverhampton, a communication line being laid between these centers.”

Bromsgrove and Droitwich Messengers: Saturday 3rd August 1878

A midwife named Ann Pinsent was remanded on Thursday, by the Birmingham magistrates, on a charge of concealing the birth of a child. In the course of some excavations close to the prisoner’s house the remains of eleven children have been found.
