Winchester’s Plate and Charters: Exhibition Now Open: An opportunity of seeing the valuable plate and charters of Winchester City is provided by a four-day exhibition at the City Guildhall, which was opened on Wednesday by the Mayor (Councillor Major J. R. Pinsent, D.S.O.). The exhibition, proceeds of which will go to the local Charity Organisations Society, is of topical interest because it includes copies of the Crown jewels. The historic charters and the plate, too, are of great interest. They are seldom on public show. _ _ The City’s treasures are insured for £3,000, but that sum by no means represents their worth. Oldest Grant: One of the most interesting of the charters is the earliest one the City possesses. Its seal has vanished, but otherwise it is in a remarkable state of preservation. The charter is dated 1155-62. It was given by Henry 11, and grants toll freedom to citizens of the Guild of Merchants. … continues …
