The Deritend Chaplaincy: Arrangements for the Election: A conference of the solicitors to the three candidates seeking election to the chaplaincy of St. John’s Deritend was held yesterday, at the invitation of Mr. R. A. Pinsent (Barlow, Smith, and Pinsent) solicitors to the trustees, for the purpose of agreeing upon arrangements for the conduct of the election. The meeting took place at Mr. Pinsent’s office; Mr. Edward Rowlands representing the Rev. Llewellyn Davies, Mr. G. T. Smith the Rev. C. J. Sneath, and Mr. A. H. Coley the Rev. J. O West. As the trust prescribes no method for carrying out the election, Mr. Pinsent followed the precedent of former elections in inviting the representatives of the candidates to join in some mutual agreement. … (ongoing discussion as to preferred date and desirability of using a ballot rather than open voting).

Birmingham County Court: Yesterday before His Honour Judge Chalmers: Application for a New Trial: An application was made for a new trial of the action brought by James Reynolds and Co., of Gloucester, flour miller, against Walter Bladin, of King Edward’s Road, Birmingham, baker, to recover £31 17s 6d, the price of thirty sacks of flour. The action was tried on the 18th inst. before his Honour and a jury. Defendant alleged that the money had been paid to plaintiff’s traveller and, though this was denied by the traveller, the jury found for the defendant. Mr. Parfitt (instructed by Messrs. Smith, Pinsent, and Co.) appeared for the plaintiffs and Mr. O’Connor for the defendants.

Birmingham County Court: Yesterday: Before His Honour Judge Chalmers: Professional Etiquette: William Hughes Marklew, designer, 312 Dudley Road, Edgbaston, to recover £50, £35 of which was paid into court. Mr. Vachell appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. Hugo Young for the defendant. The case arose out of the attempted sale of some property belonging to the defendant. It was bought by the plaintiff on the condition that he should have the title deeds given him and he paid £35 deposit. The title deeds were not forthcoming, and the plaintiff applied through his solicitor, Mr. Perry for the return of the money. Messrs. Smith, Pinsent, and Co. acting for the defendant sent a crossed cheque to Mr. Perry, made payable to the plaintiff. Mr. Perry considered this a reflection upon him, and the cheque was returned with an application for payment in cash. … … Looking at the correspondence that had taken place, he thought Messrs. Smith, Pinsent and Co. had done everything they possibly could to carry it out. … It seemed to him (the Judge) that the whole thing was a foolish bit of business …
