Newton Abbot: Election of Guardians: In the Newton Union there have been contests in two parishes only, viz., at Ideford and Bovey. At Ideford Mr. George L. Bond turned out, Mr. B. L. Lloyd, receiving 18 votes, as compared with 16 obtained by the old Guardian; whilst at Bovey Messrs. H. Pinsent, H. Mann, and W. Wreyford, the old Guardians, were all re-elected, Mr. H. Baker, the other candidate, not finding a place.

The final heat results as follows: Pincent, 41 ½ yards start (£8), 1; Cousens, 37 ¼ (30s), 2; Burnes, 37 ½ (15s) 3; Barker (Northampton, 33 ¾ (5s) 4. A clinking good race all the way and won by a few inches; a foot divided second and third and six inches third and fourth.  …

Cambridge University: Great Mathematical Tripos: There are exactly a hundred Cantabs engaged this year for the highest mathematical honours, from all parts of the United Kingdom, from Germany, and from the Colonies. Although rumours are afloat as to the probable Senior Wrangler, it would be improper to give publicity thereto, as the final examinations will not terminate until next Friday, and the ward of the Examiners will not be given till a week later.
