Birmingham Daily Post: Wednesday 25th April 1888

Inquests in Birmingham: Mr. Hawkes (coroner) held an inquest yesterday at his Court, Moor Street, on the body of Elsie Perkins, aged eight weeks, whose parents live at 15 Court, 10 house, Highgate Street. On Friday night the deceased was taken to bed by her parents and at six o’clock the following morning the mother found the child dead on her arm. The medical evidence showed that death was caused by suffocation. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned. An enquiry was held relative to the death of James Stokes (32), brass worker, Barn Street who died at the General Hospital on Sunday morning from injuries received in an accident in Vyse Street on the 20th ult. Mr. A.W. Freeman (Messrs. Barlow, Smith, and Pinsent) watched the case on behalf of Messrs. F. Whitfield and Co., safe-makers, Oxford Street. …

Oakley Harriers’ Five Miles Members Handicap: The last cross-country race of the season was decided Saturday from headquarters, Boileau Arms. Barnes. Details G. A. Fowles, 1 min. 55 sec. start (nett time, 30 min. 17 sec.), first; C. Harrod, 3 min. 13 sec. (nett time, 31 min. 40 sec.), second; C. J. Gabriel, 2 min. 15 sec. (nett time, 30 min. 46 sec.), third. Also ran: —A. Fowles. J. E. George. T. H. Lapworth, C. J. Winter, J. Pinsent, H. J. Smithson, J. J. M. Bassett, G. F. Keys (who secured the novice prize). W. Stevens, F. G. Smithson, and W. H. Cherry. After the usual “tub,” an excellent repast was provided by host Blade, to which ample justice was done. The cloth being cleared, chairman T. W. Bennett gave the order for harmony, and then one of the best smoking concerts ever held under the banner of the Oakley kennel was celebrated.

Chelmsford County Court: A curious action of replevin, in which Mr. Joseph Bruce, stay manufacturer, of Tacket Street, Ipswich was co-defendant with Mr. Wm. Marson, House agent, of Chelmsford, was tried before the County Court Judge, Mr. J. T. Abdy, at Chelmsford on Tuesday … On her death, Mr. Bruce, who had previously acted as her agent, employed Mr. Lawrence, solicitor, of Ipswich, to trace out the heir at law, and he, according to the contention for the defendants turned out to be a Mr. Arthur Pincent Mills, of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, nephew of the deceased lady, being the eldest son of the eldest brother, who was ascertained to have died abroad …
