Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: Friday 30th July 1937

Exonian Injured: Collision on Topsham Road: Suffering from severe internal injuries, a 22-year-old Exeter motor cyclist was admitted to the Devon and Exeter Hospital on Wednesday in a serious condition as a result of a collision in Topsham Road, Exeter, about 7 p.m. The injured man, Lionel Taylor of 7, Scott-avenue, was riding towards the city, and is understood that a motor car was being driven into the rear entrance of 4, Summerlands, road, by Mrs. Catherine Pinsent, when there was a collision, and Taylor was thrown from his machine. A passing motorist conveyed him to the Hospital, where he was found to have received abdominal injuries. His condition yesterday morning was reported to be a little better.

West Country Wills: Dame Emma Louisa Radford, of 2 Pennsylvania-park, Exeter, widow of Sir Heynes Radford, died at Brighton on April 26, leaving £26,766 with net personalty £24,949 (Estate duty £2,509). Probate has been granted to her nephew Brian Nicholas Radford, of Lester Lodge, Well Walk, Hampstead, and Gerald H. S. Pinsent, of Treasury Chambers, Whitehall S.W. She left her residence and Gateway House, Fitzford, Tavistock, to her daughters Cecily and Ursula Mary Radford; £100 each to her grandchildren, Chloe and Audrey Jane Pinsent; £100 to the Official Trustees of the Charitable Funds, the income to be applied for the maintenance of Lydford Churchyard, and in particular the graves of the Radford family, also for maintaining and insuring the screen dividing the chancel from the rest of the church, and the stained glass windows placed as memorials to members of the Radford family: an annuity of £13 to “my faithful servant and old friend Sarah Sillick”, £50 to Fanny Tonkin, if still in her service, and the residue to her three daughters, Katherine Pinsent, Cecily and Ursula Radford.

Glass’s Committee: A demonstration on baking a ginger cake was given to Glass W.R.I. by Mrs Anderson. The competition — for best six eggs — resulted: —1, Mrs. Mackie, 2, Miss W. Gauld, Mrs. Robertson. There were 10 1/2 dozen eggs sent to Huntly Cottage Hospital. A guessing competition on common advertisements organised by Mrs. Fraser, resulted: —1, Miss Cameron, 2, Mrs. McBain. Guessing the number of peas in the bottle was won by Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Watt. New committee is: —Hon. president, Mrs. Ingleby; president, Mrs. Pinsent; vice-president, Mrs. Duncan; secretary, Mrs. Anderson; treasurer, Miss Gauld; Mrs. Gardyne, Mrs. Mackie, Mrs. Thomson, Mrs. Smith, Miss West, Mrs. Watson, and Mrs. Robertson. Misses Thomson and Proctor were tellers. Votes of thanks to the hostesses and Mrs. Shand were given by Mrs. Anderson and to the demonstrators by Mrs. Thomson.
